Crafting Generations – a volunteering story
The opportunity to participate in a long-term volunteering project was extraordinary news last November, 2022. The title of the project being “Crafting Generations”, it awakened in me the desire to polish the skills already present in the “File of my life” and the burning desire to acquire new ones. These being considered, I started the biggest adventure I ever dreamed of , which would be unforgettable and especially one that would change my life from all points of view. So, I invite you to sit comfortably, fill your cup with coffee or tea or your favourite drink and enjoy the story of my transformation from a man who didn´t know what to do with his life to a completely new human being.

All my life I’ve been looking for a way to escape from the boring everyday routine that most people choose because it’s simple and comfortable. Finding myself at an impasse of ideas, after years of searching and trying to find a meaning in my existence in this world, I exploded with happiness, being in tears of joy, when I was accepted for a long-term volunteering project in a place that I felt in love with from the first day, Greenville.
What is Greenville and where is located?
Greenville is a wonderful place on this planet Earth, located in Vrhovcak, a small village close to Samobor, Croatia. Beautiful things are happening there in a way of eco-educational purposes and reconnection with the nature for youngsters, grownups and elderly people, projects as Erasmus+ Youth Exchange as well as European Solidarity Corps programs, different workshops and activities related to sustainability and farming, one-day school trips for primary school children designed to bring them in contact with the natural environment throughout a series of fun activities to enrich their knowledge about flora and fauna that Mother Nature has in the bag for us and so on and so forth. You can think of Greenville that is a tiny piece of heaven that provides one of the most welcoming and warmth atmospheres with the bonus of an imaginary postcard which contains your new learnings and achievements that you gain for being part of the stories that happened there.
Who’s in charge of Greenville?
As we well know, every place has someone who takes care of it. Well, here we are not talking about a single person but a team, a small team made up of a few people who wear a smile full of energy every day, ready for action, who have a long experience in organizing and facilitating programs for young people and not only, people very capable of providing any kind of support and solving any situation in a professional way. This team fully deserves its chosen name, “Pozitiva Samobor”.
What is my purpose in the project and how did I get here?
The event was not a simple coincidence that I arrived for the 4th time in Greenville. Given this fact, the team already knew who they were working with and what I was capable of. This time, however, it was a long-term project with a lot of trials and challenges to go through. My role in this project is divided into two large branches, the first and the one that is physically demanding contains the renovation and repairing the Grenville house, the design and construction of new facilities in the courtyard and beyond, and the second branch is composed of writing an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project and its facilitation. I can say that I am very familiar with the first branch, and I have been a builder all my life, starting from making boats that I used to play with in the puddles on the street to tools and small structures, but with the second branch I was not at all familiar and I can say that this was actually the biggest challenge in this project.
Now that we have the basic facts about where I landed, the team I work with, and the tasks I must complete, I’ll move on to the skills I’ve acquired and other amazing things that happened to me during my volunteer service.
Of course, no matter how much you build sometimes out of necessity, sometimes because of a hobby, you still discover something new and that’s why I was sure it would happen in this “Crafting Generations” adventure. I will list a few skills such as painting walls, installing plasterboards on walls, designing and building wooden chandeliers, building a wooden platform, building a concrete foundation for a fence, designing and building a rabbit hutch, and these are just some of the new things learned that for me they were easy to understand and acquire.
The biggest achievement, and that’s because I’ve never faced anything like this and it took me far out of my comfort zone, was writing and facilitating my Erasmus+ YE project called “Green Defenders”. It was a long period in which I worked my mental abilities a lot and in which I did a lot of research not only to write it but also for the information I needed to refresh myself for the workshops and activities that were going to compose the project timetable. The project was a real success for me and the team, with very good reviews and young people who went home with tears in their eyes and grateful for the educational program and for the opportunity to improve their knowledge regarding connection with nature, understanding the natural environment, gaining knowledge about the 5Rs of zero waste living and many other curiosities that the participants embraced with open arms.
I want to put on the page other interesting things that materialized through circumstances outside of working hours. My personal life had a gradual improvement starting from the first week I arrived in Vrhovcak. I was included more and more in various activities such as going to the gym with the team, which became a common weekly activity, going on hikes on different routes in different areas around Samobor and not only that, I had the opportunity to visit different cities for a day and I had the pleasure of discovering them in a relaxing way, I had the basic tutorial of how to sail a small sailboat, and many other fun things. I can really say that I travelled and had a lot of fun in Croatia more than I had in my native country and all this thanks to Pozitiva team and their spirit of inclusion, understanding and support in my journey.
Why and how would I recommend the volunteering program?
First of all, it is necessary to understand that this program is an opportunity for any of us to learn new things, to develop our already acquired knowledge or to work in the professional fields while helping the organizations that open their doors for volunteers. There are also other opportunities such as free time trips to explore the surroundings and more, the opportunity to integrate into a new community and to learn new traditions and habits in a way of intercultural diversity, the opportunity to learn a new language, and so on.
What we must always keep in mind when applying for a volunteer project, is that we don’t go there to walk around and that’s all. The program consists of a fair exchange between both parties, more precisely the hosting organization offers everything necessary, accommodation, meals and pocket money in exchange for the help that the volunteer undertakes to offer.
Another thing you should be interested in before applying for volunteer projects, and here I speak from the experience of colleagues from other projects, is to research the background of the organizations that offer programs of this kind, and even more than that. I have met volunteers who were disappointed by how other organizations proceed during projects, workshops and activities, they do not respect their basic duties towards volunteers, points that end up being critical for the health and well-being of volunteers.
On another note, I am one of the volunteers who enjoyed their experience to the maximum. Going back in time and thinking about how I started and how I finished the project, I can say that I am a different person from many points of view and what is most important is that after all this I acquired a lot of things that I was just dreaming. More than that, I could say that the big prize I won is a place in the “Positiva Samobor” team, something that gave me wings and made me believe even more in my dreams and powers.
Pretty cool, right? I thought so…
At the end of this story, I would like to thank all those who trusted me, those who supported me even in stormy and rainy days, those who taught me to love in many other different ways, I am grateful for all the help I received, I am grateful to those who made me feel at home and last but not least, for the fact that I have always been considered a member of the team, of the “POZITIVA SAMOBOR” family!

Un stagiu de voluntariat poate schimba perspective
Să faci voluntariat la tine în comunitate, în țară sau chiar internațional nu mai e chiar așa greu, ba chiar e la îndemână și vine cu o serie de beneficii neașteptate. Ce înseamnă să fii voluntar internațional, nu se poate descrie pe de-a-ntregul, se poate doar trăi și experimenta pe propria piele. Și tocmai acest lucru l-au făcut Iulia în Slovenia și Vlad în Slovacia.
Acum au terminat amândoi stagiile de câte 11 luni și fiecare s-a întors, numai că nu la viața dinainte, ci la cu totul altceva, căci voluntariatul internațional schimbă perspective. I-am întrebat pe fiecare despre cum a fost această experiență:
Cum ai aflat de proiectul în care ai plecat? A fost greu să fii selectat?
Vlad: Am dat din întâmplare peste anunț. Am aplicat, am fost intervievat și selectat. Destul de ușor și rapid.
Iulia: Mie mi-a spus cineva când eram în Erasmus la studii, că se poate face și voluntariat, am terminat facultatea și am început să caut proiecte, Am aplicat la ăsta și am fost selectată rapid.
Ce așteptări ai avut înainte de a pleca? S-au împlinit?
Iulia: Mă așteptam să muncesc mult și intens și să cunosc mulți oameni. Și am cunoscut mulți oameni, însă nu a fost nevoie să muncesc mult și intens, așa ca nu m-am simțit ca la un job, și am avut timp de o întreagă experiență.
Vlad: A fost exact cum mi-a prezentat organizația proiectul. Și am putut să mă implic mai mult odată ce m-am familiarizat cu toate. Dar oamenii au fost casual și relaxați.
Ce ți-a plăcut cel mai mult din toată această experiență? Dar cel mai puțin?
Iulia: Mi-a plăcut că am putut face networking, că acum cunosc oameni din domenii variate, din toată Europa. Mi-a plăcut și natura Sloveniei, dar și activitățile pe care le-am desfășurat la centrul de zi. De fapt, nu a fost ceva să nu îmi placă.
Vlad: A fost grozav că am putut să învăț o groază de chestii despre munca tehnică: lumini de scenă, programe, computere. Nu am avut nevoie de altceva. Cel mai puțin mi-au plăcut ședințele de planificare, pentru că eu primeam informațiile alea mai repede și nu mai erau noutăți pentru mine.
Crezi că ai imbunătățit ceva la tine? E ceva la care te pricepi mai bine acum decât înainte?
Vlad: Cred că am furat secrete din domeniu. Adică mă pricepeam la foto și sunet înainte, dar acum o pot face la nivel profesionist. Și am și experiența lucrului în teatru.
Iulia: Îmi e mai ușor să lucrez cu copii acum, dar și să mă exprim în limba engleză. În plus, mă orientez mai ușor pe munți și în drumeții.
Cum te descurci cu limba engleză acum? Dar cu limba țării în care ai locuit?
Iulia: Știam engleză, dar am devenit mult mai fluentă și mai rapidă în comunicare. Cât despre slovenă, știu chestii de bază. Pe parcurs m-am luat cu altele și mi-am pierdut motivația să învăț.
Vlad: Eram fluent în engleză, dar în stagiul ăsta am învățat mult limbaj tehnic, chestii pe care evident, nu le învățasem înainte, la școală. Cât despre slovacă, am avut cursuri, dar am învățat cel mai mult muncind cu ceilalți. În ultima luna deja înțelegeam ce zic cei din jur, dar îmi era destul de greu să răspund.
Ai avut situații stresante? Cum te-ai descurcat?
Iulia: Nu a fost cazul. Nimic major de care să îmi amintesc acum.
Vlad: Chestii minore ce țineau de locuitul la comun. Toate rezolvabile dacă comunici și ești matur.
Ce planuri de viitor ai acum după ce ai terminat această etapă din viață?
Vlad: Lucrez pentru Google acum și intenționez să fac o carieră din asta. Mi-a prins bine experiența din Slovacia pentru acest job.
Iulia: lucrez cu copii într-un afterschool și îmi doresc ajung în Irlanda să lucrez acolo, tot cu copii. Faptul că vorbesc fluent engleza a ajutat la actualul loc de muncă și mă va ajuta și mai departe.
Ce înseamnă voluntariatul pentru tine, acum?
Vlad: o metodă foarte la îndemână de a obține experiență de muncă.
Iulia: o experiență complexă cu ramificații neprevăzute.
Un mesaj pentru cei ce încă nu au curaj să plece într-un proiect de volutariat?
Vlad: go for it!
Iulia: Nu ai ce pierde, încearcă!

Învățând în Bratislava
Bună, sunt Vlad am 23 de ani și sunt voluntar în Bratislava, Slovacia. Postul pe care îl ocup este tehnician audio-video în centrul cultural A4 – Space for Contemporary Culture. Pe lângă acestea, locuiesc si lucrez cu alți 3 voluntari care se ocupa cu producția video, foto si managementul paginilor de social media. Programul pe care îl avem nu este unul fix si in mare parte lucram de Luni pana Duminica iar orele variază extrem de mult in funcție de evenimente.
După cum am menționat și mai sus, eu lucrez împreună cu tehnicienii audio video. Îndatoririle mele includ: pregătirea scenei pentru evenimente, atât cu lumini cât și partea audio, asistarea artiștilor dar și a personalului din birou cu diferite probleme pe care le pot avea, distribuirea de postere și booklets atât in A4 cât și în alte localuri din oraș si nu în ultimul rând crearea unei mici “reviste” împreună cu ceilalți voluntari. Pe lângă asta mă ocup și cu partea de video însemnând montarea, controlarea și înregistrarea evenimentelor cu cele 3 camere robotice. În anumite zile acopăr și partea de foto din cauza colegului meu care ori este plecat ori nu poate ajunge la eveniment.
În cele 6 luni de când sunt aici pot spune ca am învățat, si încă învăț, multe lucruri despre managementul unui centru cultural și a diferitelor evenimente pe care le avem. De exemplu, crearea și citirea unui plan de lumini, conectarea și testarea sistemului audio și a microfoanelor, ajustarea și focusul reflectoarelor pentru fiecare eveniment în parte și identificarea dar și rezolvarea problemelor care apar din diferite motive. Pe lângă toate acestea am avut ocazia, la sfârșitul anului trecut, de a lucra pentru festivalul de muzică experimentală “NEXT”. Pe lângă partea tehnică am lucrat cu fondatorul festivalului și cu un alt programator pentru a crea un spațiu 3D virtual, un fel de scena online, în care oamenii au putut să asculte și să vadă concertul. Pentru asta a trebuit sa învăț o mică parte din limbajul de programare Java și să repun în practică aptitudinile de modelare 3D învățate în facultate. Aș putea spune că traiul în Bratislava este destul de bun.
Banii pe care îi primim sunt suficienți indiferent de preferințele culinare. Împărțirea unui apartament cu alte persoane este un lucru cu care eram deja obișnuit, si lăsând deoparte micile neînțelegeri care inevitabil apar, totul e bine.
Îmi place să fac voluntariat aici și mă bucur că am ales acest proiect. Vă îndemn și pe voi să încercați voluntariatul internațional.

Portret de voluntar – Tim (Portugalia)
Boas! I’m 24 years old, I’m from the lovely Portuguese coastal city of Aveiro, and my name is Tim. You may think that this is not a very Portuguese name, and well, you’re right: my parents immigrated from Germany almost 30 years ago. Besides some travelling and a year of Erasmus exchange in Slovenia, I spent all my life in Portugal. There, I studied chemical engineering, finishing my master degree last year and working (very briefly) as a production engineer.
But something was missing.
I felt the weight of not having a concrete aim after leaving the university, and I was unable to build up enough motivation to work in a factory, producing some random goods that neither make people happier nor turn the world into a better place.
So, when the opportunity arose to be part of an environmental education project at Curba de Cultură, it didn’t take me long to pack my stuff and move further east than I’ve ever been before.
Besides some reforestation journeys back home, I have never really volunteered, and the only work with children I have done so far were some gymnastics lessons. So yes, I’m pretty much out of my comfort zone. And that’s great. It means that there is a lot for me to learn.
I love sports of almost any kind, and I already had the chance to practice a bunch of them, my latest passion being tennis. I’m also fond of everything that involves nature and being outdoor, such as hiking, cycling and gardening.
Sal’tare! Am 24 de ani, vin din adorabilul oraș Aveiro de pe coasta Portugaliei și mă numesc Tim. Probabil credeți că ăsta nu e un nume foarte portughez, ei bine, aveți dreptate: părinții mei au emigrat din Germania cu 30 de ani în urmă. Înafară de câteva călătorii și un an de studii Erasmus în Slovenia, mi-am petrecut restul vieții în Portugalia. Acolo am studiat Chimie Industrială, am terminat masteratul anul trecut și am lucrat (puțin) ca inginer de producție.
Dar ceva lipsea.
Am simțit apăsarea faptului că nu aveam un scop precis după terminarea facultății și nu eram capabil să mă motivez suficient cât să lucrez într-o fabrică, făcând niște obiecte care nu fac oamenii fericiți și nici nu fac lumea mai bună.
Prin urmare când a apărut ocazia de a deveni parte a unui proiect de educație pentru mediu la Curba de Cultură, nu mi-a luat mult să îmi împachetez lucrurile și să mă mut mai la est decât am fost vreodată.
Înafară de câteva acțiuni de împădurire, nu am făcut voluntariat, și singura muncă pe care am făcut-o cu copii au fost orele de gimnastică. Da, sunt înafara zonei mele de confort și asta e minunat. Și mai înseamnă că există multe pe care pot să le învăț.
Iubesc sporturile de orice fel și am avut șansa să practic câteva dintre ele, dar cea mai recentă pasiune a mea este tenisul. De asemenea orice implică natura și statul afară mă încântă, precum drumețiile, ciclismul și grădinăritul.
Tim este în România pentru o perioadă de șapte luni, din mai 2018 până în noiembrie 2018, în cadrul proiectului Building Youth supportive Communities – Environment [2017-2-RO01-KA105-037748] proiect co-finanțat de Uniunea Europeană prin Programul Erasmus+ și implementat în România de către Curba de Cultură.

My name is Anna, I’m 28 years old and I come from Poland. For long time after I graduated from University ( pedagogy, social rehabilitation) I have worked with youth and children from dysfunctional families. I have also been a volunteer and coordinator in many projects in polish drug rehabilitation centres, which was a great practice for me. After years living in Poland I was tired and bored of the reality, so I decided to do something different. And that is how I ended up in EVS in Romania. I didn’t know much about this country, but I was very hungry for knowledge and new experiences. My first associations with Romania? Dracula (!), Transylvania and…Cristian Mungiu. The more I started to read about this country, the more I realized how fascinating this place is and how rich is a culture and the nature of Romania. I hope I will explore as much as it is possible. I also hope to improve my English, learn a little bit of Romanian and least, but not last to gain new professional experience, working with teenagers from different nationality than my own.
Privately I am very open-minded person, I love to meet new people, travel and discover beauty in every, even not so obvious places. I also love to read books, going to the cinema and especially to the theatre, which is my new passion. I would like to see some plays here also. I will do everything I can to spend an inspiring and productive time here. And come back with thousand of great memories and photos.
Numele meu este Anna, am 28 de ani și vin din Polonia. Pentru o bună bucată de vreme, după ce am terminat facultatea (pedagogie, reabilitare socială) am lucrat cu tineri și copii care proveneau din familii disfuncționale. Am fost voluntar și coordonator în proiecte desfășurate de centre de reabilitare poloneze, lucru care a constituit o bună practică. După atâția ani de trăit în Polonia am obosit și m-am plictisit de cotidian, prin urmare am decis să fac ceva diferit. Și așa am ajuns în acest SEV în România. Nu știam prea multe despre țara asta, dar sunt dornică de noi cunopștințe și experiențe. Ce îmi vine în minte legat de România? Dracula (!) Transilvania și… Cristian Mungiu. Cu cât citesc mai mult despre țara asta, cu atât mai mult descopăr căt de fascinant e acest loc și ce cultură și natură bigată are România. Sper să pot explora cât mai mult. De asemenea sper să îmi îmbunătățesc engleza, să învăț ceva română și nu în ultimul rând să acumulez experiență profesională muncind cu tineri de o altă naționalitate decât a mea.
Înafară de asta sunt o persoană deschisă, îmi place să întâlnesc noi oameni, să călătoresc și să descopăr frumusețe orice locuri, chiar și în cele mai puțin evidente. De asemenea iubesc să citesc, să merg la film și teatru, astea sunt pasiunile mele. Mi-ar place să văd niște piese și aici. Voi face tot posibilul sp am parte de un timp productiv și inspirațional. Și să mă întorc cu mii de amintiri și fotografii.

Salut! I’m Adrianna and I’m 24 years old. I come from Poland but for the past 6 years I’ve been living in all kinds of different parts of the world. Throughout my nomad life I went to American High School, studied in the UK, did courses and internships in Vienna, Singapore, London, and Edinburgh, and most recently spent 3 months volunteering in Ghana. So of course I love travelling, learning about different cultures and ways of living, and getting to know people. But my main interest is in dance – I have a Bachelor’s degree in Dance and Culture and I’ve explored many different forms of movement – contemporary dance, contact improvisation, African contemporary, Kathak (traditional Indian dance), yoga, and others. I’m passionate about exploring how movement reflects on the culture, dancing with people, and being creative whilst moving. I have other passions too – reading books, going on nature trails, trying new food (!), listening to good music, and engaging in all kinds of story telling and discussions,
Saying that, my experience is a wild mix of different adventures – I have worked as assistant producer, choreographed my own pieces, co-directed a student dance company, danced with mixed-ability youth, and co-led scout troupe in Poland and teams of volunteers in Singapore and Ghana.
Now EVS in Curba de Cultura is my next adventure. I’m looking forward to learning about the Romanian culture, getting to know people, and exploring the beauty of this country (I’ve done some hikes already so I know that it is very beautiful here!). I’ll be looking out for opportunities to share and exchange ideas, movements and be creative together.
Salut! Eu sunt Adrianna, am 24 de ani și sunt din Polonia, dar în ultimii 6 ani am locuit în diferite părți ale lumii. În viața asta nomadă a mea am fost la liceu în America, am studiat în Regatul Unit, am urmat diferite cursuri în Viena, Singapore, Londra și Edinburgh, iar recent am făcut 3 luni de voluntariat in Ghana. Prin urmare iubesc să călătoresc, să învăț despre alte culturi și alte moduri de viață și să cunoasc oameni. Dar principalul meu interes este dansul – am o licență în Dans și Cultură și am explorat diferite tipuri de mișcare, de la dans contemporan, improvization contact, dans african contemporan, Kathak (dans tradițional indian), yoga și multe altele. Îmi place să explorez modul în care mișcarea reflectă cultura, modul în care oamenii dansează și cum să fii creativ în timp ce te miști. De asemenea sunt pasionată de lectură, plimbări în natură, să încerc noi feluri de mâncare, să ascult muzică bună și să mă implic în discuții și povești.
Prin urmare experiența mea este un amestec de aventuri – am lucrat ca asistent producător, mi-am coregrafiat propriile piese, am co-regizat un grup de dans studențesc, am dansat cu tineri cu diferite abilități și am condus un grup de cercetași în Polonia și o echipă de voluntari în Singapore și Ghana.
Acum un stagiu SEV la Curba de Cultură este noua mea aventură. Sunt curioasă să aflu mai multe despre cultura românească, să cunosc oameni și să explorez această țară frumoasă (am făcut deja scurte drumeții și știu că e frumos aici). De asemenea voi profita de șansele care apar pentru a împărtăși și schimba idei de mișcare și pentru a fi creativi împreună.

Echipa de voluntari a anului! – The best team of the year
Apparently, my colleagues and I are finalists as Volunteers’ Team of the Year. That’s cool but I didn’t need the Volunteers’ Gala to tell me. I knew that already! I’ve been working and living in Schiuleşti with these guys for 6 months, so I know what I’m talking about.
If life were like the starting menu of a videogame, they would be the characters I would pick to build my perfect team. What’s amazing is that I didn’t choose any of them, I just happened to find them in my house.
Se pare că eu și colegii mei suntem finaliști la categoria Echipa de Voluntari a Anului, la Gala Natională a Voluntarilor. Ceea ce e super mișto, doar că nu aveam nevoie de Gală ca să îmi spună asta. Știam deja! Lucrez și locuiesc în Schiulești cu acești oameni de șase luni deja, așa că știu despre ce vorbesc.
Dacă ei ar fi parte dintr-un meniu de start al unui joc video, ei ar fi personajele pe care le-aș alege pentru a construi echipa perfectă. Ceea ce e mai minunat e că nu i-am ales, ci s-a întâmplat să îi găsesc în casă.

Working in a team is hard and I feel extremely lucky to have these guys with me. My advice to make it work is to learn to accept that nothing is ever going to be as you imagined it in your head. As Roman would say: “Open your mind, open your heart, just be happy!” and things will turn out okay.
Să lucrezi într-o echipă e greu și mă simt foarte norocoasă să am acești oameni alături de mine. Sfatul meu pentru a face ca totul să funcționeze e să accepți că nu totul va fi vreodată exact așa cum îți imaginezi. După cum Roman ar spune: “Deschide-ți mintea, deschideși sufletul, fii fericit!” și lucrurile vor merge bine.

Human Library – Biblioteca Vie
Few weeks ago I thought this post will be about another trip around Romania, but… I was sick. And then again. But nobody wants to read about sweat, pain and doctors, who left their professional competences far away behind their office, right? So, I decided to change the topic, instead of What I did during my holidays I want to tell you something about Sun, happiness and angels. Yeap, I am a bit sarcastic. Let´s be a bit more serious. I was considering the nicest thing what happened in last weeks or months: my boyfriend arrived, I got a job in Czech Republic, our yard is one big ice ring, I found gloves on a street… Not really readable things. But Human Library! That is a different story!
Acum câteva săptămâni am crezut că voi scrie despre o nouă călătorie prin România, dar am fost răcită… o dată, și încă o dată. Și cum nimeni nu vrea să citească despre transpirație, durere și doctori am decis să schimb puțin subiectul și în loc de ce am făcut în vacanță vreau să vă povestesc despre soare, fericire și îngeri. Sunt puțin sarcastică, dar voi fi ceva mai serioasă. Așadar am început să listez cele mai bune lucruri care s-au întâmplat în ultima vreme: m-a vizitat prietenul meu, am obținut o slujbă acasă în Cehia, avem patinoar în curte, am găsit niște mănuși pe stradă… parcă nu sunt tocmai chestii de povestit. Dar Biblioteca Vie! Asta e o poveste într-adevăr.
What is it? Human Library is based on somehow experienced people (books) who share their story (book story) with one or two other people 
(readers) in time. As the official web page says, it “is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue”, usually in collaboration with “Books” who are subjects of those – people of different culture, HIV possitve, alcoholic, with ADHD, homeless, with autism etc.
Ce anume e Biblioteca Vie? E un eveniment bazate pe oameni care doresc să împărtășească experiențe (cărți) cu una sau două persoane (cititori). După cum zice și site-ul oficial ” a fost gândit să construiască un cadru de conversație pozitiv care aduce în dialog stereotipuri și prejudecăți” de obicei cărțile sunt persoane care au trecut prin diferite experiențe (culturi diferite, seropozitivi, alcoolic, ADHD, oameni fărăr adăpost, autiști etc)
Because Romania, especially its rural parts, does not really know what to understand under the word “volunteer” and it is easily connected with the old communistic picture of it, Curba de Cultură decided that on 5th December (the International Volunteering Day) to organize a Human Library about volunteering. The Books were Romanian volunteers which returned from international projects and us, EVS volunteers. In a local, cozy pub we had Librarians, local young volunteers who introduced the Readers (incoming guests) to the list of books. Reader then chose the one he was the most interested in and they sat down in a more private table, where the Book said its story and Reader could ask questions.
I have to say that it was very nice experience with very nicely organized
event. Although we did not have dozens of Readers, those who came got the best service. I told my story twice, first time to a woman for whom were my words translated, which was super interesting – to shorten my story and try to keep its line. The other reader was a young man and my story was suddenly different. No need of translation, different sex, age and questions. The first time it was a life of a girl, me, who had harder childhood, worked on herself, fell in love and ended up with her love. The second time it was a life of a girl, who was trying to cut her family ties so badly, that she was determined to fail every single time.
Deoarece în România și mai ales în zonele rurale nu prea se înțelege sensul termenului “voluntar” și este adesea legat de sensul pe care regimul comunist i l-a dat, Curba de Cultură a decis ca pe 5 decembrie, de Ziua Internațională a Voluntariatului să organizeze o Bibliotecă Vie despre voluntariat. Cărțile au fost voluntari români care s-au întors din stagii internaționale și noi, voluntarii SEV. Într-o cafenea confortabilă a fost organizată biblioteca, cu bibliotecari – tineri voluntari locali care au ajutau cititorii (musafirii) să aleagă cărți, cu cititori care mai apoi au ales cărți și împreună cu care au stat de vorbă la o masă mai retrasă. Cărțile își spunea poveștile iar cititorii puteau întreba. Trebuie să admit că a fost o experiență minunată într-un eveniment bine organizat.Chiar dacă nu am avut o mulțime de cititori, cei care au venit au avut parte de cel mai bun tratament. Mi-am spus povestea de două ori, prima dată unei femei iar vorbele mele au fost traduse ceea ce a făcut totul mult mai interesant fiind nevoietă să îmi schimb povestea și să îi păstrez liniaritatea. Cea de-a doua oară cititorul meu a fost un tânăr, iar povestea mea a fost diferită. Nu a fost nevoie de traducere, cititorul a fost de sex diferit, vârstă diferită și a avut ăntrebări diferite. Prima dată a fost povestea unei fete, eu, care a avut o copilărie grea, care a muncit pentru ea, s-a îndrăgostit și a rămas cu iubitul ei. A doua oară a fost povestea unei fete care și-a dorit atât de mult să se îndepărteze de familia ei încât nu a contat că a eșuat de fiecare dată.
I saw that life can have any shape or form, depending on who you talk with and what you do (not) want to mention or point out. It means that simply by focusing on the positive things, there is a big probability to change your life in a good way. At least from outside.
Am văzut că viața poate avea orice formă, depinde de persoana cu care vorbești și de ce vrei să menționeză sau să lași deoparte. Doar concentrându-te pe lucruri pozitive există deja o mare probabilitate a lucrurile să ia o turnură pozitivă. Cel puțin din exterior.

My trip to Craiova – Călătoria mea spre Craiova
I went to Craiova on Saturday morning, I knew that my best way was by train from Ploiesti Vest. Because I had to be there in the afternoon to not miss the train, I hitchhiked to reach my first checkpoint. I had breakfast and of course my meditation, I took my backpack and Fifty-Shades (our dog) came with me, as if she wanted to say goodbye. When I left the village, I met a woman and her aunt who gave me a ride to Valenii de Munte. We spoke a little bit in English, a little bit in Italian and her aunt offered me a piece of “lipie”. It was delicious. They were very kind and they took me to the bus station. From there, once again on the road I showed my right thumb and the sign saying “Ploiesti” in my left hand. After a while a nice guy picked me up and we talked during the trip about life, volunteering service and much more! After all, this is the magic of hitchhiking, you can meet interesting people with whom you can share a part of your life story. I arrived in Ploiesti and I stopped into a shop to buy my beloved “covrigi cu seminte” and vegan pastries, then I took a long walk on the street, direction Ploiesti Vest.
Am plecat spre Craiova sâmbătă dimineața și am știut că cea mai bună variantă de călătorie este cu trenul din Ploiesti Vest. Deoarece a trebuit să fiu acolo înainte de prânz pentru a nu pierde trenul, am făcut autostopul până acolo. Mi-am luat micul dejun, mi-am făcut meditația de dimineață, mi-am luat rucsacul și Fifty Shades (câinele nostru) a venit cu mine să-și ia la revedere. Când am părăsit satul am întâlnit o femeie și mătușa ei care m-au dus până la Vălenii de Munte. Am vorbit în engleză și în italiană, iar mătușa ei mi-a oferit o bucată de lipie. A fost delicioasă. Au fost foarte drăguțe și m-au lăsat la autogară. de acolo, din nou am întins degetul mâinii drepte în timp ce în stânga țineam semnul cu Ploiești. după ceva vreme m-a luat un tip, iar de-a lungul călătoriei am povestit despre viață, voluntariat și multe altele! Până la urmă aceasta este magia autostopului, poți întâlni oameni interesanți cu care să împărtășești puțin din povestea vieții tale. Am sosit în Ploiești și am oprit la un magazin pentru a cumpăra îndrăgiții covrigi cu semințe și produse de patiserie vegane, apoi am luat-o la pas spre gara Ploiești Vest.

În spatele unui stagiu EVS
Poate că e vremea să aflați mai multe despre ce se întâmplă în spatele unui proiect de mobilitate SEV și cum ajunge el să fie implementat și să dea ocazia unor tineri să învețe și să călătorească.
Un proiect SEV este bazat pe un parteneriat stabil între trei organizații:
- o organizație de coordonare – care aplică pentru finanțare la Agenția Națională (ANPCDEFP în cazul României), semnează contractul de finanțare odată ce proiectul a fost aprobat și poartă întreaga responsabilitate a proiectului precum și raportul la finalul proiectului.
- o organizație de trimitere – care promovează oferta de voluntariat și găsește persoana cea mai potrivită pentru stagiu, apoi îi oferă pregătire înainte de plecare și suport pe toată durata stagiului precum și la întoarcere.
- o organizație de găzduire – care se ocupă de toate aspectele practice ale proiectului (cazare, mese, transport local, materiale activități etc) dar și de cele legate de învățare (coordonator, mentor, cursuri de limbă, traininguri).
Alte sarcini care se împart între cele trei organizații sunt cele legate de monitorizare a proiectului, de diseminare și evaluare a rezultatelor, precum și de utilizare a acestora dincolo de durata de desfășurare a proiectului.
De cele mai multe ori însă una din cele două organizații, de trimitere ori de găzduire este și organizația coordonatoare, ceea ce simplifică puțin procesul de luare și implementare a deciziilor, dar crește numărul de sarcini și responsabilități pentru una din organizații.
După cum vedeți există o groază de factori implicați într-un proiect SEV, dar vă spunem mai multe, data viitoare.
Maybe is time for you to find out what happens actually behind an EVS mobility project and how it gets to the implementation phase and it gives the chance to some youngsters to learn and travel.
An EVS project is based on a stable partnership between 3 organizations:
- a coordinating organization – which applies for funding to National Agency (ANPCDEFP în Romania), signed the funding contract once approved and bears the entire responsibility of the project as well as the final report in the end.
- a sending organization – which promotes the volunteering offer and finds the most suitable person for the stage, offers preparation before departure and support during the entire stage as well as after the return of the volunteer.
- a receiving organization – which takes care of all the practicalities (accomodation, food, local transport, materials for activities etc) but also of the learning aspects (coordinator, mentor, language training, other trainings etc)
Other tasks which these three organizations have are related to monitoring the project, disseminating and evaluating the results and using those results after the end of the project.
Most of the times though one of the two organizations, sending or receiving, takes the coordination responsibility making the process of taking and implementing decisions process faster but increasing the number of tasks and responsibilities for one of the organizations.
As you can see there are tons of factors involved in an EVS project, but more, next time.
