Mâncare, mâncare și mai multă mâncare! – Food, food and more food!
Mâncarea aici e minunată! Cumva, reușesc să mânânc continuu de când am venit în România. Desigur, am luat în greutate, dar merită. Locuitorii comunei Izvoarele, în mod special tănticile pe care le-am vizitat, sunt generoase și ne invită constant pe noi voluntarii SEV la masă ori să încercăm câte o rețetă mai specială. Din când în când am mers la Clubul Seniorilor, iar acolo ori de câte ori este o zi de naștere a vreunui membru, fac petrecere și asta înseamnă că va fi mâncare.
Câteodată mă simt ca un musafir, dar alte dăți mă simt ca o nepoată străină ori ca o tanti mai tânără! De când sunt aici am încercat multe feluri de mâncăruri, dar favoritele mele sunt sarmale cu mămăliguță și zacusca.
The food here is great! Somehow, I am managing to eat all the time since I came to Romania. Obviously, I gained some weight, but it is totally worth it. The inhabitants of Izvoarele, especially our “tantis”, are generous and they keep inviting us, the EVSs, to eat with them in their homes and to try their recipes. Also, from time to time, I attend the Clubul Seniorilor (Seniors Club), so whenever there is a birthday of one of the members, they celebrate a party, and that means that there will be plenty of food.
Sometimes I feel like “musafir” (guest), but other times I feel like I am their foreign granddaughter or that even I am a younger “tanti”! Since I came here, I tried a lot of food, but my favorites are sarmale cu mamaliguța and zacuscă.
Sarmalele sunt făcute din carne de porc, ceapă, orez, varză, supă și condimente (și arată ca niște pachețele de primăvară); și sunt acompaniate de mămăligă, care e făcută din făină. Ador gustul acestei mâncări și odată am reușit să mânânc 7 sarmale odată.
The sarmale cu mamaliguța is made of pork meat, onions, rice, cabbage, broth and spices (and it looks like a spring roll); and accompanied with mamaliga, that is made out of corn. I really love the taste of this dish, and once I even managed to eat 7 sarmale rolls.
Cealaltă mâncare este zacuscă. Sunt numeroase feluri de a o face, dar favorita mea este cu vinete. Ingredientele principale sunt vinetele, ceapa, roșii, morcovi, ardei roșii și condimente. E foarte ușor să mănânci zacuscă zilnic, doar întinde-o pe pâine și mănâncă-o.
The other traditional dish is the zacuscă. There are several ways of making it, but my favorite is the one made of eggplants. The main ingredients are eggplants, onions, tomatoes, carrots, red peppers, and spices. It is really easy to eat zacuscă all day, just spread it on bread and eat it!

Hi! I’m Héloïse, I’m 22 years old and I just arrived in Romania from the North of France. I have a master’s degree in English and I specialized in English literature. So I’m interested in books of course, but also TV series and video games, and more serious subjects like gender equality or animals’ rights. I also love travelling and I’ve always known that I wanted to go abroad when I finish studying, and since I have worked as a volunteer in a school before, I turned to a local organisation, ADICE, to help me find an EVS project.
Buna! Ma numesc Héloïse, am 22 de ani si abia am ajuns in Romaina din Nordul Frantei. Am o diploma de masterat in limba engleza si sunt specializata in literatura engleza. Deci sunt interesata de carti, desigur, dar si de seriale si jocuri video, dar si subiecte mai seriose precum egalitatea intre genuri sau drepturile animalelor. De asemenea iubesc sa calatoresc si mereu am stiut ca vreau sa merg in strainatate dupa ce termin studiile, si de cand am lucrat ca voluntar intr-o scoala, m-am intors la o organizatie locala, ADICE, pentru a ma ajuta sa gasesc un proiect EVS.
When they told me about the project in Curba de Cultura I was very excited because it seems to be a perfect combination of learning new things, discovering a new culture and sharing knowledge and having fun, and it is exactly what I was looking for. So I agreed to the project and now here I am for 9 months!
Cand mi-au spus despre proiect in Curba de Cultura am fost incantata pentru ca parea a fi combinatia perfecta dintre a invata lucruri noi, a descoperi o cultura noua, a impartasi cunostinte si a te distra, iar asta era fix ceea ce cautam. Asa ca am fost de acord cu proiectul si acum sunt aici pentru 9 luni.
I can’t wait to meet everyone I am going to spend time with, the young people coming to Curba and my EVS colleagues in particular!

Hello! 🙂 My name is Melanie and I’m 18 years old. I am German and Polish, but I live in Belgium, where I have spent nearly all my life. Now, I just finished my school but I didn’t know what I wanted to do – study? But what, how, where? All I knew was that I wanted to go out and see a new place, and most importantly meet new, wonderful people… so when finally I came here in Izovarele to Curba de Cultura, I knew that it was really the best decision to do this EVS. Even though at first I was a bit nervous because it was the first time I’m leaving my family and my home etc. for so long, every single person that I met was so welcoming and simply kind that soon I felt super comfortable in this beautiful place. Now I’m simply exited to live here, explore, get to know you, the locals – your culture, what you love, how you think and see the world – and together with the other volunteers do all kinds of activities where we can also share a bit of ourselves! So well I’m sure we will have plenty of time during these 6 months for all of this, and I’m already really looking foward to it. See you at Curba! Melanie
Bună! Eu sunt Melanie și am 18 ani. Sunt nemțoaică și poloneză, dar trăiesc în Belgia unde mi-am petrecut aproape întreaga viață. Acum, am terminat școala și nu știam ce vreau să fac – să învăț? Dar ce, cum, unde? Tot ce știam e că vreau să ies, să văd locuri noi și cel mai important, oameni minunați… prin urmare când am ajuns în cele din urmă la Curba de Cultură, am știut că a fost cea mai bună decizie să fac acest SEV. Chiar dacă la început eram puțin emoționată pentru că îmi părăseam familia și casa pentru prima dată, pentru o perioadă atât de lungă. Fiecare persoană pe care am întâlnit-o a fost atât primitoare și binevoitoare încât curând m-am simțit super confortabil în acest loc minunat. Acum sunt încântată să trăiesc aici, să explorez și să cunosc localnicii – cultura, ce iubesc, cum gândesc și să văd lumea – și împreună cu alți voluntari să facem activități în care putem împărtăși un pic din noi înșine! Sunt sigură că vom avea timp destul în aceste 6 luni și abia aștept.

First day of school – Prima zi de școală
Blessings, good wishes, bouquets of flowers and festive clothes – the first day of school is a celebration day in Romania. But is it like that all around the world? We asked our EVS volunteers to tell us how do they find the first Romanian school day comparing to their experience from home.
Urări de bine, binecuvântări, buchete de flori și haine festive – prima zi de școală în România e o zi de celebrări. Dar e la fel peste tot în lume? Noi i-am întrebat pe voluntarii noștri SEV cum li se pare prima zi de școală în România în comparație cu țările lor.
It was really interesting to discover this part of the culture that I’ve never seen before. I was impressed of the involvement of the parents during this first day of school. /…/ In France, it’s totally different. We don’t have a ceremony for the start of the school. (Estelle, France)

In Croatia for the first day of school we go to buy new books and notebooks for new school year, new pencils, erasers, and other things we need. We go with our parents, mostly moms because dads are always working. We are excited as every kid is for their first day of school, dressed well, but not that fancy as Romanians. (Martina, Croatia)
În Croația pentru prima zi de școală mergem să cumpărăm cărți și caiete pentru noul an școlar, creioane, radiere și alte lucruri de care avem nevoie. Mergem cu părinții, de cele mai multe ori cu mamele, căci tații sunt mereu la muncă. Suntem entuziasmați ca orice copil în prima zi de școală, îmbrăcați frumos, dar nu atât de facy precum românii. In Spain, they keep trying to separate the educational system from the politics, religion and Security Forces of the State (although they are connected in not a visible way). They will only attend to some educational event if they are invited – and in this case usually there are protests or riots, especially in Universities – or if they are directly related with the course. În Spania, se încearcă separarea sistemului educațional de politică, religie și de sistemul de securitate internă (chiar dacă ei sunt conectați într-un mod invizibil). Reprezentanții acestor categorii iau parte doar dacă sunt invitați – iar aceste contexte stârnesc de obicei proteste și revolte, în mod special în Universități – ori dacă au legătură directă cu studiile. We do not have such a big event as here in Romania. /…/ Children usually cry on the first day and spend only an hour in the classroom, then the teacher or the headmaster makes a little fun for the kids with music, dance or some games. (Roman, Czech Republic)

In Argentina /…/ all the students go to their schools, raise the Argentinian flag for the first time in the year, something we do every day during the school year, and then we all sing the Argentinian anthem. /…/ We bring flowers to the teachers at the end of the school year (and if the teacher deserves it). În Argentina /…/ toți elevii merg la școală, se ridică steagul argentinian pentru prima dată în acel an școlar, lucru care se va face zilnic după aceea și cântăm cu toții imnul argentinian. /…/ Noi aducem flori profesorilor doar la finalul anului școlar (dacă profesorii le merită). I wasn’t surprised to see the priest, even though in Italy it would also be weird. Italy is a very catholic country but it is more and more multicultural, especially in the cities, and the relationship between church and state is different from Romania. (Isabella, Italy)

In comparison to the attended ceremonies, the pupils wear their daily clothes and meet their teacher in the classroom. Together with the teacher the classes go to the schoolyard or the school hall, where the ceremony takes place. Besides this, only the parents of the 1st grade kids are invited. Commonly the people sing a song with movements, which is the beginning of the ceremony. (Stefanie, Lichtenstein)
Prin comparație, elevii poartă hainele de fiecare zi și se întâlnesc cu profesorii în clase. Împreună cu profesorul clasele merg în curtea școlii sau în sala de sport unde are loc ceremonia. Pe lângă asta, doar părinții claselor 1 sunt invitați. De obicei se cântă ceva cântece cu mișcări, ca parte a ceremoniei de început. (Stefanie, Lichtenstein)
I noticed was that everybody had flowers or little bags with them to give as presents for their teachers. In my schools the teachers could only dream about something like this! (Melanie, Belgium)

From all those perspectives, we can understand better our own culture and its’ specifics. Things that seem normal to us, some might be incredible, weird, surprising to others. And that is one of the charms of interculturality that our dear EVS are bringing in the life of Izvoarele.
Urmărind aceste perspective ne putem înțelege mai bine cultura și specificitățile ei. Lucruri care par normale pentru noi, pot fi incredibile, ciudate sau surprinzătoare pentru alții. Și acestea este unul dintre farmecele interculturalității pe care dragii noștri voluntari SEV îl aduc comunității din Izvoarele.

Hi, I am Roman and I am 26 years old. I am from Prague, the capital of Czech Republic. I studied marketing communication and media relations at the University of Economy. Before coming to Romania, I worked in an Elementary school as sport “teacher” – football, ping pong and squash. I also worked with non-profit organizations in Czech Republic and I took part in two workcamps – France and Japan.
I love playing guitar, music, sport, traveling and mega super crazy people! 😊 😊
I took the decision of coming to Romania, for one year in an EVS project – ethnographic research in the commune of Izvoarele, project organized by Curba de Cultură, to challenge myself. Now that I am here and I can say it was the right decision. I am look forward to new experiences and people. Also I think I am ready to learn Romanian language and to learn more about Romanian culture.
Salut, eu sunt Roman am 26 de ani și vin din Praga, capitala Cehiei. Am studiat Comunicare în Marketing și Relații Media la Universitatea de Economie. Înainte să vin în România am lucrat la o școală primară ca “profesor” de sport – fotbal, ping-pong și squash. De asemenea am lucrat și cu organizații non-profit în Cehia, dar am luat și parte la două tabere în Franța și Japonia.

Acum, că sunt aici pot spune că a fost decizia cea bună. Abia aștept noie experiențe și oameni. În plus, cred că sunt pregătit să învăț română și să învăț mai multe despre cultura românească.

Call for a Croatian volunteer
Curba de Cultură together with PaRiter are looking for a Croatian volunteer for a six months EVS in Izvoarele, a nice and cozy Romanian village.
Curba de Cultură focuses on teenagers and youth development. Our mission is to use non-formal education as a complementary method to the formal educational system for young people. We want to create the premises for a better development of the young people and their more suited integration within their respective communities. We want to make young people aware that they actively belong to their local and national culture.
We are looking for an 18-30 years old volunteer who has:
– motivation to live and work in rural area
– motivation to work with youngsters and children
– basic knowledge of English
The activities the volunteer would do, in a team, not alone, are:
– promoting non-formal learning and volunteering through presentations and activities
– non-formal learning activities with children in schools and with youngsters in the youth centre
– organizing outdoor cinema nights
– managing the library within the youth centre
– organizing foreign language classes and cultural events
– writing articles and blogposts
– reporting and documenting activities
Being an Erasmus+ project the volunteer would also receive:
– accommodation in a traditional Romanian house (but with wi-fi :P)
– pocket money and budget for food
– bus permits for local transport
– phone sim cards and monthly credit for it
– international travel costs up to 275 EUR reimbursed in the end of the stay
– Romanian language classes
– mentor support for personal development
– coordinator support for implementing activities
– complete medical insurance through Cigna Insurrance Plan
– Youthpass certificate
– two international trainings provided by the Romanian National Agency

Portret de voluntar – Alba (Spania)
I am Alba and I come from the capital of Spain. For the next period I will be doing a monograph of the commune of Izvoarele, an amazing new project organized by Curba de Cultura. The first time I saw the project I knew that I should be part of it because you do not always find an anthropological EVS project that gives you the opportunity to study in deep the culture and society of their area.
I have studied Social and Cultural Anthropology, so definitely I wanted to prove that the humanities and social sciences can help in many ways to our present and future society. Also, before coming here I worked as a steward for a Spanish football club, but I quit my job to do this EVS.
Of course, I love to do other things. I really enjoy traveling around different countries to know a bit more about their society and culture. Also, I like hiking and discover new places; doing almost any kind of physical activity; reading, listening to music and cinema. And last but not least, it is exciting to experience new things, so we will see what happens when someone who comes from a big city goes to a rural area (✿◠‿◠).
Eu sunt Alba și vin chiar din capitala Spaniei. Pentru următoarea perioadă voi lucra la o monografie a comunei Izvoarele, un proiect minunat organizat de Curba de Cultură. Când am văzut proiectul pentru prima data am știu că trebuie să fac parte din el, pentru că nu întotdeauna găsești un SEV pe teme de antropologie care să îți dea ocazia de a studia în detaliu cultura și societatea din regiunea respectivă.
Am studiat Antropologie Socială și Culturală și prin urmare doresc să dovedesc că științele umane și cele sociale pot ajuta în diferite moduri societatea contemporană și chiar viitoare. În plus, înainte de a veni aici am lucrat ca intendent la un club de fotbal spaniol, dar am renunțat la locul de muncă pentru acest proiect.
Bineînțeles că îmi mai plac și altele, ca de exemplu să călătoresc și să descopăr societăți și culturi. Îmi place să mă plimb și să descopăr locuri noi, să fac activități fizice, dar și să citesc, ascult muzică și să vizionez filme.Nu în ultimul rând sunt foarte încântată să experimentez lucruri noi așadar vom vedea ce se va întâmpla când cineva dintr-un oraș mare vine la sat.

On Arrival Training
Before this week of On Arrival Training, I didn’t expect that I can discover so many things in a such short time. The OAT took place in Sinaia, not far from Izvoarele, so I was lucky; some of volunteers had about 10 hours by train! This town is very peaceful, with a different architecture than I’ve seen before, between abandoned and fantasy, in the middle of the mountains. We are accommodated in a hotel in the center of Sinaia where each of us had a room for himself. I imagined that it will be very nice to relax and enjoy the swimming pool and sauna for a week. The reality was different!
Înainte de săptămâna cu trainingul la sosire nu credeam că pot descoperi atât de multe lucruri într-un timp atât de scurt. Trainingul s-a desfășurat la Sinaia, nu departe de Izvoarele, deci am avut noroc; unii voluntari au călătorit zece ore cu trenul! Orășelul e foarte liniștit, cu o arhitectură diferită decât ce am văzut până acum, între abandonat și fantasy, în mijlocul munților. Am fost cazați la un hotel în centrul Sinaiei unde fiecare a avut o cameră pentru sine. Mi-am imaginat că va fi foarte relaxant ca pentru o săptămână să mă bucur de piscină și saună. Realitatea a fost cu totul alta!
Each volunteer wanted to learn more about the others and to get most of this training, so we used the rooms just for sleep. The rest of the time was for discussions or walks in the town. The relaxation schedule didn’t match with the training… But I earned more to spend time with others volunteers 😉
In few days I met almost 50 volunteers from 13 different cultures. It’s so amazing! Each volunteer who was there had the same state of mind for the training and EVS. So we had a friendly atmosphere and relationship between each of us. At the end of the week, it was so difficult to leave them. A lot of emotions invaded us in the last day and the last evening was a little sad. So, we planned all places we can visit, and it was very nice.
Fiecare voluntar și-a dorit să afle mai multe despre ceilalți și să profite cât mai mult de acest training, prin urmare ne întorceam în camere doar când ne răpunea oboseala. Restul timpului a fost pentru discuții și plimbări în oraș. Orarul de relaxare nu prea s-a potrivit cu trainingul… Dar am avut mai mult timp să petrec cu alți voluntari 😉
În doar câteva zile am întâlnit 50 de voluntari parte a 13 culturi diferite. A fost uimitor! Fiecare voluntar care a fost acolo a fost în același spirit pentru training și SEV. Prin urmare am avut o atmosferă prietenoasă și relații bune între noi. Iar la final de săptămână a fost așa greu să ne despărțim. O multitudine de emoții ne-au invadat în ultima zi, iar seara a fost choar tristă puțin. Ca să ne înveselim puțin ne-am făcut planuri să ne vizităm unii pe alții.
I had two great trainers, Sonia and Andreea, whom organized a lot of interesting sessions with happiness and humor but also with professionalism. During this week, they gave me several information and advice about my role, challenges and objectives of the EVS, the life in Romania, the way to manage the activities, the role of the mentor, the goal of the Youthpass, the insurance etc. Moreover we had sessions on conflict management, teambuilding, interculturality and culture shock workshops on art & crafts, origami, dance, tourism, history & culture and how to survive Romania. At the end of the week, I had the impression that they succeeded to touch the needs of each volunteer even though we were quite different. This helped to feel good, to regain my confidence and abilities.
Am avut doi trainer minunați, Sonia și Andreea, care au organizat numeroase sesiuni interesante cu multă veselie și umor dar și cu profesionalism. Pe durata acestei săptămâni, m-au ajutat cu informații și sfaturi legate de rolul meu, de provocările și obiectivele SEV, traiul în România, cum să-mi organizez activitățile, rolul mentorului, scopul Youthpass-ului, asigurarea medicală etc. În plus am avut sesiuni despre managerierea conflictelor, lucru în echipă, interculturalitate și șoc cultural, atelier de lucru manual, origami, dans, turism, istorie și cultură și cum să supraviețuiești în România. La finalul săptămânii cred că au reușit să atingă nevoile fiecărui voluntar, chiar dacă suntem cu toții destul de diferiți. Asat m-a ajutat să mă simt bine, să îmi recapăt încrederea și abilitățile.
After this week, I feel different. It’s easier to speak English and I feel less alone in this country. The fact that I know people in lots of places in this country means that I can move when I want to discover it.
The week of On Arrival Training is very important for a volunteer, even necessary. Enjoy this week and the days after, till the end of the EVS.
După această săptămână mă simt diferit. Îmi e mai ușor să vorbesc engleză și mă simt mai puțin singură în această țară. Iar faptul că cunosc oameni aici înseamnă că pot să mișc mai ușor când vreau să o descopăr.
Săptămâna de training la sosire e foarte importantă pentru voluntari, chiar necesară. Bucurați-vă de această săptămână și de zilele de după, până la finalul SEV-ului.

Portret de voluntar – Estelle (Franța)
Hi! I’m Estelle and I am 25. I arrived in Curba de Cultura on the 10th of April and I received a warm welcome by Sorin and Kristina on the first day and the same on the second day by other people. For the moment, I am the only volunteer in the association. It is just a lot of information, foreign languages and news of all sorts. It’s a new life which I start! And I’m really happy to be here for live this experience.
Before coming here, I worked in graphic design and photography. But I quit all I did for another experience as EVS volunteer. It’s THE experience of my life and I think it’s time for me to do what I still desire!
And I don’t know if it will be easy to learn Romanian language, but I will need to learn some words as fast as possible, just to understand people who talk around me. Some words are similar with French and English but very few, unfortunately. I tried to teach romanians some french words but they are a little bit surprised by the pronunciation… I don’t understand why! 😉
Salut! Eu sunt Estelle și am 25 de ani. Am ajuns la Curba de Cultură pe 10 Aprilie și am fost primită călduros de către Sorin și Kristina în prima zi, și am fost trată la fel și în cea de-a doua de alți oameni. Pentru moment sunt singurul voluntar de aici. Am primit multă informație, multă limbi străină și tot felul de noutăți. Încep o viață nouă! Și mă bucur să sunt aici și să trăiesc această experiență.
Înainte de a veni aici am lucrat ca designer grafic și fotograf. Dar am renunțat la tot ce făceam pentru experiența de voluntar SEV. Este Experiența vieții mele și cred că e vremea să fac ceea ce îmi doresc.
Nu știu dacă va fi ușor să învăț română, dar va trebui să învăț câteva cuvinte cât de repede posibil, să înțeleg ce vorbesc oamenii în jurul meu. Unele cuvinte sunt asemănătoare cu cele din franceză sau engleză dar puține, din păcate. Am încercat și îi învăț pe câșiva români cuvinte franțuzești iar ei au fost surprinși de pronunția mea… Nu înțeleg de ce! 😉
Estelle este în România pentru o perioadă de nouă luni, din aprilie până în decembrie 2017, în cadrul proiectului EVS20: Let’s Move and Change [2016-3-FR02-KA105-012345] proiect co-finanțat de Uniunea Europeană prin Programul Erasmus+ și implementat în România de către Curba de Cultură.
We are looking for volunteers to unveil the village of Izvoarele
Starting from June 2017 for one year we will host four volunteers from Italy, Spain, Czech Republic and Slovenia for one year. They will do sociological and anthropological research, they will gather information about crafts and arts in the area as well stories and food recipes. All these will be turned into video, photo and written material which we will use to promote the beautiful community of Izvoarele.
The fact that the people in the community are so hospitable made us think that this can be a great opportunity to collect local legends and pieces of history straight from the villagers and to turn them with the help of the international and local volunteers into tools of promoting the community. During this process, not only that the volunteers will have the chance of feeling and living local culture and getting the sense of multiculturalism but they will also get basic competencies in sociological researches and in creating and implementing promotional campaigns and promotional materials.
We are looking for four volunteers willing to work and live for a year in rural Romania, to experience the lifestyle here and to document it. We guarantee an unforgettable experience. What do you need to have?
- to be between 18 and 30 years old
- to be motivated to do international volunteering
- to be strongly motivated to live and work in rural area
- to be interested in learning a different European language
- to be motivated to develop new competencies and to learn about community development
- to have basic English communication skills, spoken and written
- to be motivated to do research in the community and to create video and text promotional materials out of it
What do we provide:

How do you apply? If you are from Slovenia send a CV and a Motivation letter. The motivation letter should answer to the questions:
– why do you want to go for 12 months EVS?
– why would you work in rural area?
– why would you like to do sociological research?
