“Trucks, dogs and a bear” or “Me and Romania”
Hi there!
You have already heard about me, I am the one from Czech Republic, the red head one. I am also the one who was a bit surprised, in the best way, by her new live in Romania. We were told we are going to live in a typical rural house. OK. I was prepared for dry toilets somewhere in the end of our yard, mice everywhere, hot water only from stove… sharing my room with all the other volunteers.
Nope. First of all, we have two bathroom inside the house, both. Well… almost inside. So far I have my own room just and only for myself. So far I have discovered the advantage of kitchen placed in yard – you eat when you need to, not when(ever) you have a sweet tooth. And so far I discovered how amazing Romanians are. Not sure when your bus leaves? No problem, somebody stops and takes you even if you are not hitchhiking, just stay in the bus stop and wait for a minute or two. (Well, we already know it does not work if you are French with dreadlocks or dark Italian. But it works if you are a nice person, especially girl. Sorry, boys.)
My first weeks were about discovering local… everything and everyone. I have been introduced to our adopted dog Fifty Shades, chickens, local volunteers (sweet young people with heads full of ideas, jokes and notions), to my/our activities, and, of course, to „my“ organization. Yeap, all of it in the same time. During the week we make interesting and entertaining lessons such as music, languages or handicraft, we play games with local kids, and show a movie. During weekends our programme is up to us, which means I am walking around the neighborhood.
Last time I wanted to see the nearest mountain, Moşa (1420). It took me 5 hours to get there, half the trip was just climbing through a forest, but it was worth it. I love crazy hiking with no road, so I would enjoy it anyway. I took some pictures and a snack on the peak, then it was time to come back. And I did a bad, bad choice to follow local „tourist mark“. I ended up in… nowhere, far, far away from home with only two hours of light left. I had to decide and to do it quickly. Fine, lets go across the forest, my GPS tells me the direction and I do not need to be afraid of bears, our boss claims they live only among the big mountains.
Well, it turned out he was wrong. We were staring at each other, two living statues on an animal path between bushes, one of them furry and four-footed, the other one human. I had to laugh when the bear ran away so, so fast, that it made me wander if he survived the speed. Next time I am more careful about my decision, 40 kilometers is quite a lot for one hike. Next time I am riding the bear!

Potret de voluntar – Anna (Cehia)
I have been working with Erasmus students for several years, the activities I have done or seen had led me to realize how important it is to “study” other countries’ – language, habits, mentality… During my studies I also noticed how important it is to lead other young people, especially those with disadvantage background, to study not just languages, but other cultures and habits, too. It helps with self-development as well as community development.
But all the opportunities I could take gave me no more than nice memories and just a hint of real experience. In my region are many people, younger or older, who would deserve better (better opportunities, activities etc.) and I would like to offer it. This is the reason why I am highly interested in abroad volunteering. I would like to enhance my communicative and language skills, learn other country´s language and system of work with youngsters (and volunteers). Moreover I would like to offer you my enthusiasm, openness and diligence.
Am lucrat pentru câțiva ani cu studenți Erasmus, iar activitățile pe care le-am făcut, m-au făcut să realizez cât de important este să “studiezi” limba, obiceiurile, metalitatea altor țări. De-a lungul studiilor mele am observat cât de important este să ghidezi tinerii, în special pe cei provenind din medii defavorizate, să studieze nu doar alte limbi dar și ale culturi și obiceiuri. Acest lucru contribuie la dezvoltarea personală dar și la cea a comunității.
Dar toate aceste activități nu mi-au oferit decât amintiri frumoase și doar gustul unei experiențe reale. În regiunea mea există mulți oameni, tineri și bătrâni, care ar merita mai mult (șanse mai bune, activități mai bune etc) și mi-ar plăcea să le ofer asta. Acesta este motivul pentru care sunt atât de interesată de voluntariatul internațional. De asemenea mi-ar place să îmi îmbunătățesc abilitățile lingvistice și de comunicare, să învăț o altă limbă și un sistem de lucru cu tinerii (și voluntarii). În plus vreau să ofer entuziasmul, deschiderea și să îmi dau toată silința.

Portret de voluntar – Alessio (Italia)
I consider myself a friendly guy, I am very open-minded and living with a disability since childhood and this has given me the strength of will, determination and a bit of stubbornness, so if I get a target, I must get it. Beside this I like to joke, I try to see life with optimism and I believe in values like love, friendship and respect.
I believe that the EVS projects are a great opportunity. I am participating in this one hosted by Curba de Cultură because I want to broaden my horizons, to learn about a new culture and also because I firmly believe that an experience like this is a learning experience for personal growth, a step forward to feel citizen of the World.
Personally I am fascinated by the idea of working with young people because they are often the ones who need a person to talk or with whom to meet. So from this experience I expect to increase my cultural and personal baggage, to live and to confront new educational experiences with other volunteers with different backgrounds than mine. I think this will not be a common experience but I will take the best from it.
Mă consider un tip prietenos, deschis la minte și deși am o ușoară dizabilitate încă din copilărie asta mi-a dat putere, determinare și un pic de încăpățânare, prin urmare dacă am o țintă, trebuie să ajung la ea. Pe lângă asta îmi place să glumesc, să văd viața într-o notă optimistă și cred în valori precum iubire, prietenie și respect.
Consider că proiectele EVS sunt oportunități minunate. Particip în acesta, găzduit de Curba de Cultură deoarece vreau să îmi lărgesc orizonturile, să descopăr o nouă cultură și cred cu tărie că o experiență ca asta este o experiență de învățare, de dezvoltare personală, un pas în față în a deveni un cetățean al Lumii.
Personal sunt fascinat de ideea de a lucra cu tineri, deoarece adesea ei sunt cei care au nevoie de cineva cu care să vorbească ori cu cine să se întâlnească. Din acest stagiu mă aștept să să îmi cresc bagajul cultural și personal, să trăiesc și să experiementez o nouă experiență educațională împreună cu voluntari provenind din alte medii decât al meu. Aceasta nu va fi o experiență obișnuită, dar voi lua ce e mai bun din ea.

Brașov – lovely city
This weekend was joyful and with some news friendships. I went to Brașov by hitchhiking as usual. So I’ve waited for a truck or a car or any rolling object to take me there. At last a truck stopped. It was a man and his 14 years old son. They were really nice and the son could speak English which was great because he could translate what his father was saying. So he drove me till the center of Brașov (they were SO kind), and he offered me 20 lei because I told him that I forget my “sacoche” at CdC office before start hitchhiking. So I had to accept, and that money really helped me during the weekend, thank you very much truck driver.
Acest weekend a fost încântător și cu noi prietenii. Am mers la Brașov făcând autostopul, ca de obicei. Am așteptat un camion ori o mașină ori vreun altfel de obiect rotitor care să mă ducă acolo. În cele din urmă a oprit un camion. Era condus de un bărbat și fiul său de 14 ani. Au fost foarte amabili iar băiatul vorbea Engleză, ceea ce a fost minunat, pentru că a putut traduce ce zicea tatăl său. Așa se face că m-a dus până în centrul Brașovului (au fost așa de amabili) și mi-a oferit 20 de lei pentru că i-am spus că mi-am uitat “sacoche” la CdC la birou. Prin urmare a trebuit să accept și banii aceea m-au ajutat în weekend, pentru asta îi mulțumesc șoferului de tir.
Then I’ve rolled till Elena’s house. She is our wonderful mentor. The next morning, it was a sweet waking up in happiness. Elena made the breakfast and afterwards I went in city for skateboarding. I’ve rolled around the city, looking for spots and in the middle of this I met Liina. She is actually working in a hostel in the center. After I sweated like a pig I went to the Black Tower to enjoy the view, which was superb. On the way down, I heard someone playing guitar and singing powerfully so I stopped where he was and starting to talk and play guitar. He was singing, I was playing, and we were chatting. I tried to sing as well because his voice stoked me. Anyway, afterwards we spend a part of the night together with his friends that I met, and I returned to Elena’s house.
Next day I woke up late at 3.30 pm. Elena brought me to the town and I decided to walk up the Tâmpa hill where is the big BRAȘOV sign. That was amazing: the walk up the hill was physically worth it. Once up, I just took my time because I was out of breath. Minutes later, Liina joined me up there. When we finally decided to get down it started to rain and we got totally wet! The street was the river of Mississippi, I swear! In the main square were many Tango dancers under the rain, it was a beautiful moment. This weekend will be stuck in my head.
Apoi am mers pe skateboard până la casa Elenei. Ea este minunatul nostru mentor. Următoarea dimineață m-am trezit fericit. Elena a pregătit micul dejun, iar apoi am mers în oraș să mă dau cu placa. M-am dat prin tot orașul, căutând locuri cât mai potrivite și am întâlnit-o pe Liina. De fapt ea lucrează într-un hostel în centru. După ce am transpirat ca un porc am urcat la Turnul Negru pentru a admira privelistea, care a fost superbă. La coborâre am auzit pe cineva cântând la chitară și cu vocea atât de intens încât m-am oprit unde era muzicantul, am intrat în vorbă cu el și am cântat la chitară. El cânta cu vocea, eu la chitară și mai povesteam. Am încercat de asemenea să cânt pentru că mi se părea că vocea lui m-a încărcat și pe mine. După asta am petrecut o parte din noapte împreună cu el și cu prietenii lui, iar apoi m-am întors la casa Elenei.
Ziua următoare m-am trezit târziu la 15.30. Elena m-a dus în oraș și am decis să urc pe Tâmpa la semnul acela mare cu BRAȘOV. A fost minunat: urcatul dealului a meritat efortul fizic din plin. Odată ajuns sus m-am odihnit căci rămăsesem fără respirație. Câteva minute mai târziu Liina mi s-a alăturat. Când, în cele din urmă, ne-am decis să coborâm a început să plouă și ne-am udat complet. Strada era un adevăarat Mississippi, jur! În Piața Sfatului erau dansatori de tango, care dansau în ploaie. A fost un moment minunat. Acest sfârșit de săptămână îmi va rămâne în minte.

Hitchhiking in Romania
Thursday evening, Dodo and Kristi came by hitchhike from Râmincu Sărat to pick me up from Schiulești. We enjoyed our evening together, and Friday we left at 10:00 am. First direction: Râmnicu Sărat.
So we walked, and we met, at the end of the village, a girl who told us that a friend of her goes to Ploiești (the middle of our way to Râmincu Sărat). We waited for him, and he came! We left Schiulești and he brought us to Ploiești. There he didn’t want us to continue hitchhiking he wanted us to take a bus. He dropped us to the bus station, and he also gave us 50 lei for tickets! It was crazy! I never saw this before! We had to wait 45 min in Ploiești before the bus departure, so we went in restaurant, but when we came back… there was NO BUS anymore. Shit… we had to take a cab to go out of the city to hitchhike!
Two cars picked us up and we arrived in Râmnicu Sărat. There we joined the other friends. We were 6 in total therefore we divided ourselves in two groups and the adventure started!
It was a mess at the beginning, two cars took us, but we were still in Râmnicu Sărat. Finally a car brought us on the way to Constanța…
And there was a problem: there were not too many cars using the road. So we were waiting in a gas station, we didn’t have sign, so a guy took us to the closest city (Crazy Romanian peoples are so helpful !!!). After a long wait another guy took us to a crossing in our way. We were in a Roma village, so EVERYONE was looking at us, it was a little bit scary… Luckily 3 minutes later 2 guys, electricians, really cool guys picked us up! They brought us a bit closer to our destination. There we were waiting aaaaaaaand waaaaaaaiting for someone, when finally a young guy with his van stopped. Bad luck, he had just 2 seats in front and we were 3. After negotiating among us, 2 of us went in the front and one in the back! Nordine was the first in the back! After that me and later Yasmine! And what else do you think it was travelling with us? A baby cat! This way 2 hours and half past with his van! It was really cool!
Finally we arrived to Constanța where we met our host from coachsurfing. Dan with his wife Maria. They were amazing! Now it came the time to enjoy the sea and the city and the holidays !!!
The way back was by hitchhiking as well. This time we were two, Nordine and me! We waited 5 minutes and a couple took us until Bucharest ! Surprisingly they spoke really good French! They also ask us if we wanted to take the bus, they proposed to pay for us (crazy this Romanian, too helpful!!!). We refused of course. The trip continued with McDonalds breaks and with another couple driving us. They stopped in a gas station and bought us water! Later they dropped us in Ploiești! The last car taking us was an English car! With again a really cool guy!
Result of this weekend: I realized that I have never met people so Friendly and Helpful before!

A weekend and two destinations
The last weekend I went to two nice destination. The first one was the wonderful Măneciu Lake from Friday afternoon to Saturday Midday. I went there with two nice Estonian people 🙂 One of them is Liina formerly volunteer at Curba de Cultură, and her friend Ragnar. We walked under the sun heat and when we arrived I had only one thing in my mind, to get into the water! Since I came to Romania and once the heat came I was dreaming of swimming somewhere. Later we set the tents and we spent the night there. Of course the next morning we took again a bath in Măneciu Lake.
The second destination was Ploieşti. I went there taking a last moment decision, by hitchhiking and the trip proved to be crazy. Why? Because I didn’t know where I will sleep. I did some request on Couchsurfing but people didn’t responded so quickly, I can say they didn’t responded at all. I also did that on the last moment so it was not a surprise. Anyway, I’m not afraid of these kind situations.
Next, when I arrived in Ploieşti, I didn’t know this city, so I relied on what I knew when I went there once with Sorin. (our coordinator) So I saw some skateboarders on a nice little place and I decided to talk to them to get some more info about Ploieşti. Then I decided to skate for a while and it was a good idea. I had lots of fun with those guys who were really nice by the way. And finally the end of the day came, I tried to not sleep but I was too tired. (Sleeping on the public grass, it’s ok 🙂 )
Next morning I returned to Schiuleşti by hitchhiking. So this is how a boring weekend can turn into a great one.
La sfârșitul săptămânii trecute am pornit spre două destinații interesante. Prima a fot minunatul lac de la Măneciu, unde am stat de vineri de la prânz până sâmbătă la prânz. Am mers acolo cu doi prieteni din Estonia 🙂 Unul dintre ei este Liina, fost voluntar la Curba de Cultură și prietenul ei Ragnar. Am mers pe jos sub soarele arzător iar când am ajuns am avut un singur lucru în minte, să ajung în apă. De când am ajuns în România și de când s-a încălzit vremea am visat la a înnota undeva. Mai târziu am pus corturile și am petrecut noaptea acolo. desigur, dimineața următoare am făcut din nou baie în lacul Măneciu.
Cea de-a doua destinație a fost Ploiești. am plecat într-acolo ca urmare a unei decizii de ultim moment, făcând autostopul, și călătoria s-a dovedit a fi una nebună. De ce? Pentru că nu știam unde voi dormi. Am făcut câteva cereri pe Couchsurfing, dar oamenii nu au răspuns rapid, aș putea spune că nu au răspuns deloc. Totodată am și solicitat cazare în ultimul moment, așa că nu sunt surprins. Oricum, nu mi-e teamă de astfel de situații.
Când am ajuns în Ploiești, nu cunoșteam orașul așa că m-am bazat pe ce am știut când am fost acolo o dată cu Sorin coordonatorul nostru). Am văzut niște skateri într-o zonă frumoasă și am decis să discut cu ei, să aflu mai multe informații despre Ploiești. Apoi am decis să mă dau cu skate-ul pentru o vreme și a fost o idee bună. M-am distrat cu tipii aceia, care au fost chiar amabili. Și în cele din urmă a venit sfârșitul zilei, am încercat să nu dorm, dar eram prea obosit. (Dormitul în parcul public e ok 🙂 )
În dimineața următoare m-am întors în Shiulești făcând din nou autostopul. Astfel un weekend plictisitor s-a transformat într-unul minunat.

Portret de voluntar – Mael (Franța)
I am Mal, I am 20 years old and I am coming from South of France. My passions are skateboarding and music, both listening and playing drums and a bit of guitar. I am a vegetarian and I think this would be a big challenge in Romania, a country not really vegetarian friendly.
Thinking of my future, this EVS project hosted by Curba de Cultură seems to be a great opportunity, an opportunity to not miss. Furthermore I am motivated to live and experience life in rural area and to help at the development of the community. Definitely choosing this project changed the course of my life, but now I think it will also change the way of thinking.
I felt like going to discover the world, to discover cultures and to extend my vision and here I am. I started from Romania and most likely I am not going to stop here.
Eu sunt Mael, am 20 de ani și provin din sudul Franței. Pasiunile mele sunt skateboardingul și muzica, atât ascultatul cât și cântatul la tobe și puțin la chitară. Sunt vegetarian și cred că asta va fi provocare majoră în România, o țară nu tocmai prietenoasă cu vegetarienii.
Gândidu-mă la viitor, acest proiect SEv găzduit de Curba de Cultură pare a fi o șansă grozavă, una de neratat. Mai mult, sunt motivat să trăiesc și să experiementez viața într-o zonă rurală și să contribui la dezvoltarea comunității. Alegând acest proiect cursul vieții mele a fost schimbat, dar cred că îmi va schimba și modul de gândire.
Am simțit nevoia să descopăr lumea, să descopăr culturi și să îmi extind viziunea așadar de asta sunt aici. Am început cu România, dar cu siguranță nu mă voi opri aici.

Portret de voluntar – Margot (Franța)
I have always wanted to work within the social community. Helping and giving my best for others is one of my principles for my professional and private life. This EVS in Romania can make this objective come true. Beside this learning how to be more organised and traveling are essential things for my future life.
The project in Romania attracted me even more, because it is in a rural area and this somehow brought back memories to me, memories from the time I used to live in Jura, a rural area in east of France. After that I moved to a deprived neighborhood in Marseille and here I had to adapt as well, so I got pretty good integration skills, which I would be glad to use and transfer during this project.
Another area in which I have experience is theatre. I collaborated with a theatre company for five years. I contributed in lots of events, performances, meetings and cultural shows. The experience raised my deep wish to work in foreign countries.
All these experiences made me what I am today and I have no doubt that they will be very useful for the mission I have in Romania.
Mi-am dorit dintotdeauna să lucrez în domeniul social. Să ajut și să dau ce am mai bun pentru alții e unul din principiile vieții mele personale și profesionale. Acest SEV în România poate face ca acest obiectiv să se îndeplinească. Pe lână asta să învăț să fiu mai organizată precum și călătoritul sunt lucruri esențiale pentru viitorul meu.
Acest proiect în România m-a atras chiar mai mult datorită faptului că e localizat într-o zonă rurală și mi-a reimprospătat amintiri, amintiri din perioada când locuiam în Jura, o zonă rurală din estul Franței. După aceea m-am mutat într-un cartier mai sărăcăcios al Marsiliei, iar aici a trebuit să mă adaptez de asemenea. Așa se face că am dobândit niște abilități de integrare destul de bune, abilități pe care sunt încântată să le pot folosi dar mai ales transfera.
Un alt domeniu în care am experiență este teatrul. Am colaborat cu o companie de teatru pentru o perioadă de cinci ani. Am contribuit la o mulțime de evenimente, spectacole, întâlniri sau shouri culturale. Experiența dobândită mi-a determinat o creștere a interesului pentru munca în străinătate.
Toate aceste experiențe m-au făcut cine sunt și sunt sigură că ele vor fi foarte utile pentru misiunea mea în România.

Aventura SEV continuă – EVS adventure continues
About two weeks ago we said See you next time to three of our four volunteers, we wished them luck with their plans and we hope we could also continue make changes in the community happen. Of course we are not left alone, we still have Franck until the end of June and we already have a new member in our team of volunteers. So here I present you Margot, our French volunteer. She is going to spend with us five months, from beginning of May till beginning of October, five months which we hope to be greater than ever for all of us.
Margot Mosse is a 19 years old French, coming from Marseille. She is interested in theatre, photography and African dances. She like trying new things and getting challenged but she is also skilled in organizing workshops and events.

Acum mai bine de două săptămâni am spus La revedere unui număr de trei, din cei patru voluntari pe care i-am găzduit. Le urăm mult noroc în îndeplinirea planurilor pe care și le-au făcut și sperăm ca noi să putem de asemenea continua a face schimbări benefice pentru comunitate. Desigur nu am rămas singuri, Franck este în continuare cu noi, până la finalul lunii iunie și avem deja un nou membru în echipa de voluntari. Aceasta este Margot și vine, tot din Franța. O găzduim pentru cinci luni, de la începutul lunii mai până la începutul lunii octombrie, cinci luni care sperăm să fie minunate pentru toți.
Margot Mosse are 19 ani, e franțuzoaică și vine din Marsilia. Pasiunile ei sunt teatrul, fotografia și dansurile africane. Îi place să experimenteze lucruri noi și să fie provocată, dar este de asemenea și pricepută la organizat ateliere și evenimente.

Punct și de la capăt
Când ești voluntar SEV de-a lungul perioadei de stagiu treci prin numeroase faze. La început ți se pare că cele 10-12 luni stagiu vor fi o eternitate dar oricum, nu te grăbești nicăieri. La un moment de-a lungul stagiului se întâmplă ceva ce te face să îți dorești să lași totul baltă și să te întorci acasă. Dacă treci cu bine peste acel moment și conștientizezi că ai de fapt mult mai multe de câștigat decât de pierdut și alegi să îți continui stagiul descoperi că dintr-o dată cineva a apăsat pe butonul de repede-înainte și momentul reîntoarcerii în țara ta vine mai repede decât îți dorești.
Asta s-a întâmplat și cu trei din cei patru voluntari găzduiți de Curba de Cultură, iar la finalul lunii aprilie am spus La Revedere Aniei, Liinei și Sophiei. Asta nu înseamnă însă că nu vor mai exista șanse de a ne revedea. Până atunci însă fetele își vor pune în aplicare planurile și ideile îndrăznețe pe care le au, iar asociația noastră se pregătește de primit noi și noi voluntari care să continue munca minunată depusă de fete.
When you are an EVS volunteer throughout the stage you go through different phases. At the beginning 10-12 months of stage seem an eternity but anyhow you are not in a hurry. At some point something bad happens and you wish just to run back home. If you pass this moment and you realize that you have more to gain than to loose from the situation you also discover that somebody pushed the fast-forward button and the moment of the return comes way to fast.
This is what happened with three out of the four volunteers hosted Curba de Cultură, and in the end of April we said See you next time to Ania, Liina and Sophie. This does not mean there will be no chances of seeing each other. Until then, the girls will apply their plans and bold ideas and our association prepares for a new round of volunteers to continue the great job done by the girls.
