Curba de Cultura in Local Media

Curba de Cultură was founded în 2013 but the idea behind it is way longer. For four year already Curba de Cultură is changing things in Izvoarele community through its projects and with the help of its partners and its financiers.

From 2015, apart from Youth Exchanges and Training courses, Curba de Cultură started to host EVS volunteers in Erasmus+ projects. This thing led to an unexpected impact increase upon local, regional and even national level, the organization has.

În 2016 the collaboration between association and local schools for different activities and events was underlined by the local media and not just once. In the pictures above you can see articles about EVS as well as short portraits of the hosted volunteers.

Sfaturi pentru viitorii voluntari – Advice for future volunteers

We’ve been talking in the articles of this webpage about our four volunteers. They were the very first volunteers hosted by Curba de Cultura, but definitely they aren’t the last ones, because we wish that hosting EVS volunteers to become a tradition for the community and the organization. So we asked the four volunteers to elaborate a “manual” of volunteering life with practical advice, a manual which will be improved by every generation of volunteers.

Bellow you can see some of the advice, the full version is to be found at the organization headquarters.

Hey there new volunteers!

Welcome to Schiulești, the best village you could find to spend your EVS. If still you are not afraid to stay here, better start to be … or you can take some of our advice and nothing bad will happen. We will guide you how to deal with things here. Possibly, they are very different from those you left behind in your country.

But hey, keep your smile on, something amazing just started in your life. And one more thing – Congratulation for taking the decision to come here. Good decision.

“Rules” of EVS life:

  1. Go outside your comfort zone. The best things are waiting for you at the end of it.
  2. Be prepared for not being prepared in many situations.
  3. Take your own initiatives- you can create something amazing.
  4. You may have problems, but do not concentrate only on them.  It’s simple – every problem has a solution. Everything depends on how you see and live things. Don’t forget “there is also Good in this World” – Mr Frodo
  5. Be ready for many misunderstandings.
  6. Find the thing which will help you to stay motivated. There is a reason why you decided to come here, don’t forget it in the meantime.
  7. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You are a human and humans make mistakes from time to time.
  8. Organize something great. Here you have the chance and the support to do it.
  9. Local volunteers are cool and they can really help you
  10. Remember: NO regrets in life. Just lessons learned.

The last week of march brought two major events in the schools of the Izvoarele commune, the most activ partners of our association.

On 20th March The International Francophonie Day was celebrated. Obviously it was an event which Sophie and Franck couldn’t miss. After all who would be more entitled to attend such event if not two native French? The two volunteers were not just spectators, they also took part in the entire show prepared. They sang, they danced, and they shared lots of information about french culture, habbits and traditions.

In the same, last week of March there was organized a meeting for sharing practices for all the English Teachers of Prahova county. For this meeting Ania and Liina were invited to share their experience in working with children and to share activities which they use to encourage them to become active and receptive to knowledge of English language. There is no need to mention all the benefits which middle school and high school students have from the partnership between schools and Curba de Cultură, they are extremely visible. Also this partnership has lots of benefits for the EVS volunteers as well, by giving them the chance of being creative, inventive and to organize themselves towards better results.

ESM – Easter Edition

12898247_1029417127137588_3485380959109631377_oFor orthodox christian Easter is on 1st of May but for the catholic christian is in less than a week so Liina and Ania decided to dedicate one of the last editions of English Speaking Meeting to Easter holiday. All the conversations and games chosen for this meeting were based on the Easter topic. But this was not all, they also organized a workshop for decorating eggs.

Now almost at the end is pretty obvious that all these meetings in which youngsters and volunteers discussed different topics and played games were very useful, they made them open up and feel much more comfortable in speaking to others, using a foreign language, English in this case.

After EVS – Life perspectives

Getting closer to the end of their EVS stages the fourth volunteers with their mentor’s help started to make some future plans, to look for options to follow. Let’s see one by one:

Sophie – once back in France she is going to work for MRJC – a french NGO in the youth sector. There she is going to take care of one of their projects, a Youth Exchange, for which Curba de Cultură is partner.

Ania – wants to finish her studies but as well she wishes to use all the skills gained. until she is sure of what she will do she got a summer job in Italy, a country that she loves.

Liina – has plans to return to Romania. In June she will participate in a Youth Exchange in the North part of Romania, Poiana Negrii. Afer that she will work for a while in a hostel in Brasov. She wishes to stay in Romania, because she fell in love with it.

Franck – is going to help Sohie with the Youth Exchange in August. After that he hope to become part of the MRJC team, and maybe to continue his studies.

For now, a month before departure these are their plans.

Youthpass, or what you get at the end of EVS

Even though is about non-formal education the European Commission decided that a form of recognition of the learning results in a mobility project, like the EVS ones could be more than welcomed. This is how the Youthpass certificate appeared and it gets a bigger and greater value year by year.

What exactly Youthpass is:

  • a confirmation of participation by the organisers of a specific activity;
  • a description of the activity;
  • an individualised description of the activities undertaken as well as the learning outcomes;
  • a tool which states the key competences achieved;
  • a way of improving visibility of learning in the Erasmus+ Programme;
  • an explanation of Erasmus+ Programme activities which can be understood by the people outside the youth

In short this is what Youthpass is and what it can give you at the end of a mobility. How you make it provide you with all these this is what you find out together with your mentor, in trainings, from your volunteers coordinator, project manager and from all the people involved in non-formal learning and Erasmus+ projects. What is certain is that it will prove its usefulness throughout your entire professional life.

Ce este mai exact Youthpass:

  • o confirmare din partea organizatorilor, a participării la o numită activitate;
  • o descriere a activității;
  • o descriere individuală a activităților efectuate și a rezultatelor învățării;
  • un instrument care certifică competențele acumulate;

În casa voluntarilor – In the volunteers’ house

Let’s pay a short visit in the house of those which for more than half a year DSC_0011make efforts in changing the community. The four youngsters which through what they do every day, they show to children and youngster in the community that living in the rural area also has advantages, that speaking in a foreign language even with mistakes is better than not speaking it at all or that judging people around is wrong.

DSC_0062But let’s put the words aside and let the pictures show you the place which for few months the volunteers are calling it home.

Portret de voluntar – Sophie (Franta)

SophieI am very attached to rural areas I also come from this kind of area and I think encouraging them to invest in their people is what they need to continue living. I want to share my various experience and skills I gained in the animation field and I think that through it I can contribute to the social economy and the sustainable development of the community. I wish to offer to youngsters a safe environment where they can express themselves, dream, play, meet, accept differences, share opinions and take responsibilities and all these outside school.

Beside the above mentioned things I am also good at organizing events, trips, vacations and moreover trainings for personal development of children and youngsters. So yeah, this is me, Sophie, I am French, I am 24 and I am doing my EVS in Romania, here with Curba de Cultură.

DSC_0016Between 7th and 14th of February there was a school holiday. We, at Curba de Cultură took advantage of it and we even had activities planned in two locations in two different projects. Anyhow here we will talk about what our EVS volunteers prepared, but if you want to find out more about that period click here.

BeFunky CollageUnder the name of Winter Fun, Liina and Ania with the help of Franck and Sophie organised three captivating days for the children and youngsters in Schiulești.

Tuesday was boardgames day – children had the opportunity of learning new boarding games, practicing or even teaching others how to play. The games form Curba de Cultură’s collection proved their value and utility once more.

PicMonkey CollageWednesday in the afternoon the girls projected Monster Inc, a funny and catchy animation to which they added popcorn and so the day ended in an optimistic and joyful note.

Friday was the day which brought a Treasure Hunt. And even though there was lots of wind and a cold weather the hunt for finding the clues which lead to the treasure heated up everyone, organizers and participants at the same time.

Mentor si Coordonator – Mentor and Coordinator

Every EVS project is implemented by an entire team of people. Among these, the ones working directly and longer with the volunteer are the mentor and the coordinator.

Mentor is a person that can help a volunteer to reflect on his/ her experiences and through the process of reflection help to find a personal way of change, if it is wanted by the volunteer. Mentor also oversees such processes as acculturation, cultural shock, learning process, learning process during volunteering experience and is capable of reacting in those moments when the need is felt or observed . Mentor can be also open to meeting the volunteer not only for reflection but also bonding as friends, to be able to create a trust-based relation between them.

The volunteers coordinator is the one in charge of the actual work of the volunteers, he/ she introduces the volunteer to the working place, tasks, colleagues and beneficiaries. The volunteer works under direct guidance of the coordinator and is reporting to him, as well as contacts him if there are problems or difficulties in accomplishing the tasks. Also the coordinator is the one preparing the organization for receiving volunteers, makes the recruitment and the selection, plans and organizes orientation and induction meetings, maintains a relation with press/ media and represents in general the link between volunteer and organization.
