My favorite mentor! – Mentorul meu favorit!

IMG_4485-blog The European Volunteer Service isn’t only about the project, the house, the other volunteers, the coordinators, the association… it’s also about the mentor. Who? What? When? Where? I will explain you a bit.
The mentor is an outside person of the association who takes care of the integration in your new environment and community, the evolution in your project, but in general he/she is the personal support during the EVS. You can meet as many time as you want and need during the project, in the association or another place that you decide together. But this is a short description, because in fact, he/she does more than we expect in terms of personal development and profesional evolution.

Now, I will explain more about my super mentor! Her name is Elena but everybody calls her Tromppy (the reason will stay secret 😉 ).

I remember exactly our first meeting. I arrived on 10th of April in Romania and the day after I met her in Brașov. This day was tiring for many reasons, but it was the beginning of a wonderful adventure for me. With Sorin, we left Curba de Cultură to reach Brașov, a beautiful town 2 hours away from Izvoarele, passing through the mountains and beautiful landscapes. Then, I met Tromppy and after a welcoming hug, we went to drink a coffee in one of the student’s favorite bar in the town. And we talked, talked and talked with my poor English, searching my words and sentences, to get to know each other. Then, we came back late, and I was trying to don’t fall asleep during the 2 hours back by car. I will not forget this second day in Romania.

After this first meeting, we met one or two times per month, in the office or in Brașov. Each time, it was  about new adventures, feelings, stories that we shared together, during one, two or three hours sometimes. Because, the mentoring isn’t only about myself, it’s a sharing about personal experiences together. And with Tromppy, we have to force ourselves to stop talking at some point, to let time for my housemates. Since June I’m not the only volunteer anymore!
We have a really good feeling, she is my guide and my personal support, and thanks to her I discovered some part of myself that I didn’t know before. But it’s not only a story of talking, it’s also a story of discoveries. We organised some meetings in Brașov to visit the town and the areas. We were fascinated by the beautiful view of the town and landscapes around, when we hiked mount ” Tampa”. And recently, we visited the center of Brasov, the “Black and White Towers”, from where we discovered another view. In general, when it’s possible, we enjoy to be outside, walking in the park of Schiulești, or somewhere else, our interest for the nature being common.

In brief, having a mentor like mine is A-MA-ZING! And I’m very glad that I met her during this volunteering, to talk, to laugh, to hug, to discover… Even though my lovely housemates Isabella, Alba, Gabriel and Roman, complain because of the time I spend with her for the mentoring. It does not matter, I enjoy each minute :)!
Dear volunteers, I hope you will meet a mentor who helps you to see further than you expect!

My favorite place – Locul meu preferat

During the 2 months I visited many places but especially Brașov it was a nice place, I visited it with other EVS volunteers and our mentor Tromppy. Also we visited city Ploiești. The city is located 56 km north of Bucharest, there are many cultural and architectural monuments and you can see the Clock Museum or Oil Museum and also Art museum of Ploiești. Typical for the city are its communist buildings and also why we always visit this city is for the big shopping center. Also during On-Arrival Training I visited Bucharest, which has an amazing atmosphere and there is a lot of sightseeing.

But I spend most of my time in the village of Izvoarele, which has the amazing atmosphere because of the people who live there. On the streets, you can see a lot of cats, dogs, cows and especially horses with a trailers. Most horses pull hay or wood from the forest. Sometimes it’s crazy on the way home when we’re on the road and the cows are blocking us.

It’s hard to write what the best of all I’ve ever visited in Romania because I can say that Romania is really a beautiful country.

Locul meu preferat.

But if I should choose, so is village Schiulesti and nature around this place. I love nature and above all mountains. That’s why village Schiulesti. Because when I need to be alone with my thoughts, I disappear from our house, take my own good walking shoes, book, water, biscuits and especially guitar and I try to find the right place to stay. When I find this place, I sit down and look at the beautiful nature and the beautiful view of the whole area of Prahova. Everything is quiet around and I just wonder if its two days or two months since I am in Romania.

I recommend this time for yourself to stop from the chaos of everyday day. Just find time!

Autumn is coming

img_4498Traveling… Another trip. Yeap, that´s me, I need to visit nice places to learn nice things. I need to experience a lot to remember a lot. This time I ended up at Saint Ana´s Lake. As you see, it was not my lake, but it belongs to some other Ana with only one n.

Well, it started with bad luck. We (yeap, I was not alone this time, my dearest was with me) learnt that the hardest hitchhiking is in a small village. After an hour of walk through nothing we managed to get our first car. Not the last one. In the end of the day we were behind Brasov. This was good. But then… another bad luck. There is no forest to sleep in! Nothing but rain, mud and empty branches above us. We spent the first night among bare trees, wet leaves and upset dogs on the edge of the city. My shoes were still doing the squelching noise, when I took my thumb out of the warmness of my sleeve to catch some kind soul behind a wheel. This day was better, from one car to another and tadaaa, we are walking the hill to an old, old volcano. In the middle of forest, in the middle of wood where is every single colour you can imagine, but not the touristic one. It simply disappeared.

Ei bine a început cam ghinionist.

In the end of October you just hope, that if yimg_4527ou are breaking wind after eating a lot of beechnuts, AND the bear is breaking wind after eating a lot of beechnuts, well, you hope you will not meet each other during this process.
We did not, yet we found so many bear´s poops I quit counting them when I was at number twelve. There was first snow of this year, colours on trees and under our feet, and wind and drizzle around. Weather with sense of humor, indeed. Where are we supposed to sleep, he? Under the bear´s fur? There it would be so, so warm. Inside of his belly.

We are making fire in the edge of the lake, enjoying our freezing fingers and drying img_4455clothes, fear of animals and presence of each other. But we can not stay, it is too dangerous. On our way again, in the middle of the night. Singing songs to keep the fear in bay and bears far away from this horrible noise. This time we managed to find a nice three beech trees in a corner of a small park or what ever it was. Hidden from the worst wind and the most curious eyes, we have slept in the end of a camping place.

Vremea chiar are simțul umorului.

Another day, another long, long walk. Mud was everywhere, but where is our yellow touristic mark? Ehm, vanished four or five trees ago. Only our sense of direction led us to a road, yet it was nowhere to be found. For those kind of situation I have my phone and my phone has.. GPS! The road was there, just behind a hill. And another hill, and another. Then there was a muddy meadow, long muddy field and… long, frequented road. What does it mean? It means fast way back home! Even though we had to spent another night outside, because it was not as fast as expected. Walking through a small village, again somewhere behind Brasov, surrounded with rain, wind and barking dogs. Suddenly a door opened. Well, I helped them. Old, reconstructed cow house gave us the roof and safety, and what more, even comfort. It was full of corn, a soft and funny bed for us.

The lesson from this trip: Do not underestimate the weather. But what is more important: If you ever have the opportunity, try to make a race across a hill of corn while wrapped inside of your sleeping bag. It is… unbelievable funny.

Deodată o ușă s-a deschis.

P1140252This weekend was joyful and with some news friendships. I went to Brașov by hitchhiking as usual. So I’ve waited for a truck or a car or any rolling object to take me there. At last a truck stopped. It was a man and his 14 years old son. They were really nice and the son could speak English which was great because he could translate what his father was saying. So he drove me till the center of Brașov (they were SO kind), and he offered me 20 lei because I told him that I forget my “sacoche” at CdC office before start hitchhiking. So I had to accept, and that money really helped me during the weekend, thank you very much truck driver.

She is our wonderful mentor. The next morning, it was a sweet waking up in happiness. Elena made the breakfast and afterwards I went in city for skateboarding. I’ve rolled around the city, looking for spots and in the middle of this I met Liina. She is actually working in a hostel in the center. After I sweated like a pig I went to the Black Tower to enjoy the view, which was superb. On the way down, I heard someone playing guitar and singing powerfully so I stopped where he was and starting to talk and play guitar. He was singing, I was playing, and we were chatting. I tried to sing as well because his voice stoked me. Anyway, afterwards we spend a part of the night together with his friends that I met, and I returned to Elena’s house.

Next day I woke up late at 3.30 pm. Elena brought me to the town and I decided to walk up the Tâmpa hill where is the big BRAȘOV sign. That was amazing: the walk up the hill was physically worth it. Once up, I just took my time because I was out of breath. Minutes later, Liina joined me up there. When we finally decided to get down it started to rain and we got totally wet! The street was the river of Mississippi, I swear! In the main square were many Tango dancers under the rain, it was a beautiful moment. This weekend will be stuck in my head.
