Voluntariatul prin ochii Emiliei
Am visat multă vreme să voluntariez în Africa și am citit multe informații despre realitățile acestui continent, Anul ăsta a fost mai dificil pentru mine deci să colectez și caut informații mi-a adus un fel de pace și mi-a păstat speranța de mai bine. Abia așteptam o gură de aer proaspăt într-o nouă călătorie. Îmi amintesc furtuna ”stai acasă” a izbucnit și am descoperit că fără călătorit mă simt ca un pește fără apă.
Acum două luni am primit o invitație de la Corpul European de Solidaritate să voluntariatez în România. La început credeam că este o glumă hazlie. Cum ar trebui să pot împacheta în câteva zile, să-mi părăsesc locul de muncă și să amân treburi importante, pentru a merge într-o țară în care nu am mai fost. Cu toate astea, ideea nu m-a lăsat să dorm. Era acolo, bâzâind în mintea mea. Am spus da! De ce nu? Și nu o regret deloc!
Am cunoscut o grămadă de oameni din diferite culturi. Deși fiecare voluntar are propriul proiect aici, am avut și șansa de a luncra împreună și a ne cunoaște mai bine. Unii dintre ei erau implicați în renovarea clădirii unde Curba de Cultură își are sediul principal. Am organizat evenimente, filme și promovare. Odată, am organizat o seară de film într-un sătuc mic, cu numai 15 locuitori. Am pregătit o cinema în aer liber cu ecranul pe o dubă. Am fost așa entuziasmați și am aranjat totul în mijlocul nimicului când, surpriză! A trebuit să înlăturăm o parte din scaune pentru a lăsa niște fermieri să treacă cu căruțele cu cai. După ce am reamenajat, patru copii timizi din sat au venit să vadă ce se întâmple, să vadă filmul. Îmi amintesc că am fost așa de fericită și entuziasmată pentru ei pentru că eu nu am avut parte de astfel de experiențe când eram mică.
De-a lungul săptămânii lucram cu tineri și copii la Centrul de Tineret. Proiectul pentru care am venit s-a numit Descopră-ți potențialul. Scopul său a fost să creeze oportunități atât pentru tineri cât și pentru cei mici. Jocuri, distracție, integrare multiculturală, artă sau activități fizice și multe altele. Am învățat noi abilități sau limbi unii de la alții. Fiecare voluntar putea contribui cu ceva. Un bun exemplu este ultima lecție de spaniolă desfășurată afară de Robertp, sau atelierul de gătit cu Oana. Am pregătit ”zacuscă”, o pastă de legume tradițional românească pe care o poți mânca pe pâine și să simți doar bucurie.
Uneori, voluntariatul poate fi dificil, dar în același timp aduce mult bine în viețile altor persoane, mai ales alor noaste. Cred că fiecare dintre noi ar trebui să experimenteze asta măcar o dată în viață.
Una dintre experiențele pe care nu le voi uita a fost aceea de a face o cocă pentru 100 de clătite și 74 de brioșe. Noi eram responsabili cu gătitul tuturor acestora pentru evenimentul de promovare. Ne-am împărțit în echipe de cinci voluntari și am lucrat pentru acest eveniment festiv. Cei care mă știu sunt conștienți că mă ambalez destul de mult în bucătărie. Când am primit această sarcină eram destul de îngrijorată, dar până la urmă am reușit să o facem și să ne și simțim bine.
De obicei avem weekendurile libere pentru a putea merge să călătorim și să învățăm despre cultura locală. Sunt așa recunoscătoare că am profitat de acest timp în întregime. Am vizitat Bucureștiul, capitala, și am încercat bucătăria tradițională românească. Alpturi de un alt prieten, am văzut trei orașe frumoase și vechi: Sinaia, Brașov și Sibiu, situate printre munți. În timp ce făceam autostopul, am găsit o doamnă foarte drăguță care ne-a dus până la locația noastră. A fost surprinși să aflăm că aceasta era italiană, exact ca și prietenul meu Elia. M-a surpins și numărul de urși din zonă, dar nu m-a speriat îndeajuns încât să nu merg pe traseu și să încerc cățăratul multi-pitch pentru prima dată în viața mea. Am putut vedea orașul și munții dintr-un punct mai înalt. Timpul stă în loc când ai o astfel de priveliște.
Le datorez majoritatea acestor momente deosebite ce mi-au îmbogățit experiența oamenior minunați pe care i-am întâlnit. Cu care atât gătitul împreună cât și munca crâncenă au fost experiențe extraordinare. Oameni cărora nu le e frică de sentimente sau provocări. Care pot merge cu tine în toiul nopții la o nuntă în România pentru a explora cultura mediului local și a adânci relațiile interanționale la nunți tradiționale.
”Cerul nopții este foarte limpede aici. Mă duce cu gândul la casă și îmi dă un sentiment de singurătate. Mă uit la stele și mă simt așa mică în întregul univers. Dar, în același timp, cu persoanele potrivite lângă mine, mă simt atât de vie și sprijinită indiferent cât de departe de casă sunt.”

I have long dreamed of volunteering in Africa and read a lot of information about the reality of this continent. This last year was more difficult to me so gathering information and searching gave me some peace and kept me dreaming about being better. I couldn’t wait for a fresh breath of air while on a new journey. I remember a time when the “stay home” storm broke out and then I discovered that without traveling I feel like a fish without water.
Two months ago, I got an invitation from the European Justice Corps to volunteer in Romania. At first, I thought it was a funny joke. How am I supposed to pack in a few days, leave my job and postpone many important matters, in order to go to a country where I have not been to before. However, the idea of it did not let me sleep. It was there, buzzing in my mind. I said yes! Why not? Well, I do not regret at all!
I met a lot of people from different cultures. Although, each volunteer has an individual project here, we also got the chance to work together and to get to know each other. Some of them were involved in the renovation of the building that would be the future headquarters of the Curba de Cultura organization. We organized events, film openings and promotions.
One time, we organized a movie night in a very small village, with only 15 inhabitants. We set up a field cinema on the back of the van. We were so excited and had everything arranged in the middle of nowhere, when.. surprise! We had to take away all the chairs to let some farmers pass with their horses. After rearranging four shy children from the village came to see what’s going on, to watch the movie. I remember being so happy and enthusiastic for them because I did not have any of this experiences when I was younger.
During the week, I was working with children and youngsters at the Youth Center. The project I have come for was called Uncover your Potential. Their purpose was to create opportunities for both young people and the youngest. Games, fun, multicultural integration, art or physical activities and many other activities. We learnt new skills or languages from each other. Each volunteer could contribute with something. A good example is the last Spanish lesson conducted outdoors by Roberto, or the cooking workshop lead by Oana. We prepared “Zacusca”, a famous Romanian veggie spread that you eat with bread and just feel joy.
Sometimes, volunteering can be difficult, but at the same time it brings a lot of good to other people’s lives, especially our own. I think each of us should experience it at least once in a lifetime.
One of the experiences I will never forget was making a dough for 100 pancakes and 74 muffins. We were in charge of cooking all of these for promotion event. We worked in teams of five volunteers and we prepared for this festival event. People who know me are aware that I make quite a fuss in the kitchen. When I got the assignment I was all worried but eventually we managed to do it and to have a good time as well.
Usually, we have the weekends free to be able to go traveling and learn about the local culture.
I am so grateful I took advantage of this time fully. I visited Bucharest, the capital, tried traditional Romanian cuisine. Along with another friend, I saw three beautiful old towns: Sinaia, Brasov and Sibiu situated among the mountains. While hitchhiking, we found a very nice woman who drove us to our location. We were surprised to find out that this woman was Italian exactly like my friend Elia. I was surprised by the number of bears in the local area, but it did not scare me enough not to go on the trail and try multi-pitch climbing for the first time in my life. I was able to see the city and the mountains from a higher perspective. Time stops when you have that kind of a view.
I owe most of these amazing and enriching moments I experienced here to the wonderful people I met. With whom both cooking meals together or hard work was an extraordinary experience. People who are not afraid of challenges or feelings. Who can go with you in the middle of the night to a wedding in Romania to explore the culture of the local environment and deepen international relations at traditional weddings.
“The night sky is very clear here. It makes me think about home and gives me a feeling of loneliness. I look at the stars and I feel so tiny in the whole universe. But, at the same time, with the right people next to me, I feel so alive and supported no matter how far I am for my home!”
Schimb de tineret
La începutul lunii septembrie, 4 voluntari locali și un membru al echipei noastre au fost în Piles, Valencia, Spania pentru a participa în Project “U” împreună cu alți 15 tineri din Italia, Lituania și Spania.
Proiectul a fost un schimb de tineri organizat de “Associació Cultură Creativa” finanțat prin programul Erasmus+.
Câteva dintre principalele obiective au fost creșterea angajabilitatii participanților și intrarea facilă pe piața muncii, întărirea moralului și a încrederii în sine, dar și ajutorul pentru a-și descoperi fiecare talentele, precum și folosirea acestora în viitoarea carieră. În același timp, aceștia au primit informații despre valorile europene și despre diferitele oportunități pe care Erasmus+ le oferă.
Diana: Acest schimb de tineri a însemnat pentru mine oportunitatea de a mă cunoaște pe mine însămi și de a îmi dezvolta capacitatea de a comunica cu alte personae. Pe lângă faptul că am învățat spaniolă, am avut ocazia să întâlnesc o grămadă de oameni extraordinari și să învăț foarte multe de la aceștia. Tot acest proiect a avut un puternic impact asupra vieții mele și asupra perspectivelor pe care le am despre lume.
Toate activitățile la care tinerii au participat au folosit metode de educație non-formală, role-play, ateliere, discuții de grup, brainstorming, jocuri și activități de exterior.
Prima zi s-a concentrat pe cunoașterea participanților prin activități de grup, dar și descoperirea proiectului și a scopului acestuia. Pentru a realiza acestea, tinerii au făcut diferințe activități precum jocuri de energizare și au completat o serie de provocări care i-au ajutat să creeze legături.
În următoarele două zile scopul proiectului a fost găsirea Ikigai-ului personal. Cuvântul propriu-zis “Ikigai” și conceptul din spatele acestuia provin din japoneză și înseamnă “valoarea vieții” sau “ce te face să îți dorești viitorul chiar dacă nu te bucuri așa de mult de present”. Participanții au realizat diferite activități care, încetul cu încetul, i-au făcut să ajungă la un rezultat final. Un exemplu de astfel de activitate era să descopere ce tip de inteligență predomină în gândirea lor. Următoarele sesiuni de activități care au fost zilele următoare își doreau tot descoperirea Ikigai-ului personal în timp ce tinerii luau parte la ateliere de educație non-formală.
Georgian: Acest schimb de tineri a fost pentru mine un carusel emoțional, dar nu într-un mod neplăcut. Am simțit emoții pe care nu le am simțit până acum la această intensitate, emoții pe care nu le-am putut găsi acasă sau la școală. A fost foarte util, dar în același timp o lovitură în spate factul că a trebuit să încep să mă gândesc la ce vreau de la mine, ce vreau în viitor și ce fel de persoană sunt și ce aș vrea să schimb la mine și la modul meu de a trăi în viitor.
După descoperirea scopului principal al proiectului, participanții au asistat la o sesiune informativă despre diferitile oportunități ale programelor Erasmus+, cum ar fi: Youth Pass, multe programe de voluntariat și o varietate largă de cursuri de pregătire și schimburi de tineri, precum și multe altele.
Mihai: Interacțiunea cu niște oameni care s-au dovedit a fi foarte interesanți a fost o experiență memorabilă pe care am avut-o în această vară. În primul rând mă refer chiar la echipa în sine și la faptul că am reușit să trăim toți împreună în același loc. Un alt aspect din care am avut de învățat a fost diferența culturală dintre noi care nu ne-a împiedicat să reușim să asigurăm pentru toată lumea un loc sigur de conviețuire. Ultima dar nu cea din urmă a fost munca în echipă care a fost impresionantă pe tot parcusul călătoriei.
În a cincea zi a proiectului echipa multiculturală au fost împărțită în echipe și au mers în Gandia pentru a participa la o vânătoare de comori. Fiecare echipă în parte avea un set de sarcini pe care trebuiau să le completeze pentru a afla mai multe despre cultura și istoria orașului.
Au desfășurat de asemenea activități de grup unde a fost ales un lider și s-a lucrat în echipă pentru a rezolva diferite taskuri cum ar fi construirea unui turn din spaghete sau protejarea unui ou cu diferite articole de papetărie, acesta fiind aruncat de la o distanță de 2 mentri.
Sesiunile de activități din următoarele zile s-au concentrat pe piața muncii. Tinerii au început să descopere în care parte a zonei lor de confort sunt. În aceiași zi aceștia au avut posibilitatea să participe la ateliere create chiar de ei despre diferite lucruri cum ar fi sănătatea mintală, cântatul la chitara, yoga etc.
Călin: Când trebuie să mă gândesc la ce am făcut vara trecută, “Project U” îmi vine imediat în minte. Acesta a fost o experiență cuprinzătoare și atașată de foarte multe culturi. Am legat foarte multe prietenii cu participanții și am învățat multe lucruri noi despre Spania, Italia și Lituania. Unul dintre cele mai interesate aspecte legate de proiect a fost reprezentat chiar de călătorie în sine. Iubesc să vizitez locuri istorice și turistice în același timp. În plus, subiectul principal pe care s-a focalizat proiectul este de asemena importat pentru mine. A fost o oportunitate să învăț despre piața muncii și cum să candidezi pentru locurile de muncă.
Ultimele zile s-au focalizat pe diferite strategii pentru intrarea pe piață muncii, au lucrat toți împreună pentru a creea CV-uri interesante, au învățat ce este recomandat să postezi pe social media și ce nu ar fi indicat să apară în feed-ul nostru și au organizat de asemena activități role-play care să simuleze un interviu. Într-una din sesiuni participanții au discutat despre rata de șomaj din fiecare țară care face parte din proiect și cum pot combate asta.
Totuși, aceste 10 zile nu au fost doar despre muncă asiduă, participanții au avut suficient timp liber să afle și să învețe despre celelalte culturi reprezentate de țările participante, acestea fiind făcute în serile interculturale. Fiecare echipa și-a împărțit cunoștințele și curiozitățile despre ea cu chestionare interactive și prezentări dinamice. Aceștia nu au uitat și de gastronomia specifică, împărțind câteva tipuri de mâncare și dansuri tradiționale.
Ultima zi a fost dedicată evaluării proiectului și pentru a vorbi despre posibilele variante de a raspandii rezultatele positive ale acestuia.
Carla: A fost prima dată pentru mine când am participat la un schimb de tineri, în plus și ca lider de grup, deci totul a fost complet nou pentru mine. Aceste zile au fost destul de viguroase, deși să trăim împreună cu un grup de străini a fost surprinzător de ușor și am învățat mult din asta. Toate activitățile pe care le-am făcut mi-au întrecut așteptările și zilele au trecut foarte repede. Per total, experiența pe care am trăit-o a avut un impact puternic pozitiv asupra vieții mele personale și profesionale.
Atmosfera per total a fost foarte prietenoasă și familială din primul moment când ne-am întâlnit. Toată lumea a fost interesată în a cunoaște viața așa cum este ea în fiecare dintre țările participante.

Last September 4 of our local volunteers and one member of our staff went to Piles, Valencia, Spain to take part in Project “U”, together with another 15 youngsters from Italy, Lithuania and Spain.
The project was a Youth Exchange organized by Associació Cultura Creativa in the frame of Erasmus+ programme.
The main objectives were future employability of the youngsters and how to facilitate to them the entrance on the labour market, empowering them and increasing their confidence and trust their capacities, and also to help them discover their talents and how to use them in their career. In the same time they were receiving information about the European values and the different types of opportunities Erasmus+ offers.
Diana: The youth exchange meant a new opportunity for me to discover myself and to develop my communication abilities. Besides improving my Spanish skills, the participants I had the opportunity to meet were amazing and I’ve learned a lot from them. The whole project had a strong impact on my life and on my life perspectives.
All the activities the youngsters made were using Non-Formal Learning methods like role-playing, workshops, group discussions, brainstorming, games, outdoor activities…
The first day was focused on knowing the rest of the participants and making group activities, also to discover more the project and its main topics. In order to do that, the participants made different kind of energizers and completed a series of activities that helped them bonding among each other
Georgian: This youth exchange has been an emotional rollercoaster for me, not in a bad way, feeling emotions that I never felt before or that I haven’t felt at that intensity, emotions that I couldn’t feel at home or at school. It was very helpful and it was the kick in the butt that I needed to start thinking about what I want to do in the future and what kind of person I really am and what I want to change about myself and my way of living.
The two next days were focused to discovering their Ikigai. The word and the concept of Ikigai comes from the Japanese culture and its meaning is something like “life value” or “what makes you wish the future comes even if you are not having a good time in the present”.
The participants made different activities which, step by step brought them to a final result. One of those activities was focused on discovering which type of intelligence predominates in them. In order to do that, they had to make different small tasks, all of them related with one kind of intelligence. At the end of the session everybody put in common the results and received an explanation of each type. The rest of the sessions for those days followed the objective of discovering their Ikigai meanwhile they were taking part in nonformal learning activities.
Once they discovered one of the main objectives of the project, the participants made an informative session about the different options the Erasmus+ Programme offers such as: Youth Pass, the different type of volunteering projects and the big variety of Training Courses and Youth Exchanges, and many other.
Mihai: Interacting with such interesting people was a very powerful experience that I had this summer. First and foremost it was the actual team and the ability to manage to live in one place all together. The second developing part was to understand interculturality between us and make for everybody a safe place to cohabitate. The last but not least was our teamwork in our multicultural Romanian team that was impressive in our journey.
During the 5th day the participants were divided in small groups and they went to Gandia to make a Scavenger’s game. Each group had a list of tasks to complete which helped them to know more about the culture and the history of the city.
The sessions for the next days were focused on the labour market. The youngsters started discovering in which phase of the comfort zone they were. The same day the participants made different workshops, implemented by themselves, about different kind of things like mindfulness, play the guitar, yoga…
The last days were still focused on giving them
different strategies to get into the labour market; they worked on how to
create a catchy CV, they learned what they can and can’t post on their social
media and also made a role-playing simulating a job interview.
One of the sessions was focused on how is the unemployment situation in each
country taking part of the project and were the youngsters who made it.
Călin: If I have to think about my last summer, the project “U” will totally come into my mind. It was such a comprehensive intercultural experience, I developed good relationships with the participants and I learned a lot of things about Spain, Italy and Lithuania. One of the most exciting aspect of the project was represented by the travel itself. I adore to visit historical and touristic places. In addition, the main topic of the project was very important to me. It’s was a great opportunity to learn more about the labor market and job applications .
They also made group activities where they had to choose a leader and work together to reach a common objective like make a high and stable tower with spaghetti or to wrap a raw egg in order to not break after throwing it from 2m height.
The last day was dedicated to make the evaluation of the project and to talk about the possible ways to disseminate the results of it.
But those ten days weren’t only focused on working; the participants had time enough to know and learn about the culture of the other countries that were represented there during the thematic nights. They shared curiosities about the different cultures with some quizzes and dynamic presentations, and hey also had time to know and taste part of the different gastronomies and traditional dances!
Carla: It was my first time taking part in a Youth Exchange and also being the group leader, so everything was totally new for me. Those days were pretty intense where the cohabitation with a group of strangers was surprisingly easy and enriching. The activities went beyond my expectations and the days went really fast. Overall, the experience had a really positive impact in my personal and professional life!
The atmosphere that was created was very friendly since the first moment; everybody was interested into knowing how life is and the language in the other countries.
D&D Training course for Youth Workers
We have just completed the training for youth workers entitled Dungeons and Dragons: an adventurous approach to global learning .
14 youth workers and DMs from 4 countries met with Global Learning and D&D game in Romania.
They shared their creativity and experience of working with young people, helping them create dozens of relevant and adventurous scenarios for young people from all over Europe.
D&DGE is a strategic partnership project in the field of youth, co-financed by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program, implemented by the Drustvo D20, Curba de Cultura and other partners.

Tocmai am finalizat cursul de formare pentru lucrătorii de tineret intitulat Dungeons and Dragons: o abordare plină de aventură a învățării globale .
14 lucrători de tineret și DM din 4 țări s-au întâlnit cu Global Learning și jocul D&D în România.
Aceștia și-au împărtășit creativitatea și experiența de lucru cu tinerii, ajutându-i să creeze zeci de scenarii relevante și aventuroase pentru tineri din toată Europa.

Easter in Teișani
Această reflecție asupra sărbătorilor pascale a fost pregătită în comun de Josué și Gertrudis, voluntarii noștri din Spania din cadrul proiectului Discover Teișani. Tradus de Alex Popa.
Chiar dacă România face parte din Europa și în unele aspecte nu atât de diferită de țara noastră, in același timp ai senzația de a fi într-o realitate ieșita din comun. Ca exemplu, odată cu Paștele întâlnim – cea mai mare sărbătoare creștină – sentimentul este că probabil ați mai văzut un lucru asemănător, dar este în același timp unul deosebit, deoarece biserica de aici este o biserica ortodoxă, se aseamănă celei catolice, care este cea cu care noi suntem obișnuiți. Aceasta este prima noastră experiență cu partea necunoscuta de noi a creștinismului.Am avut oportunitatea sa ne bucuram pentru prima oara de Pastele Tradițional Romanesc in satele Teișani si Olteni. Am fost anunțați ca aici festivitatea Paștelui este urmat de vechiul calendar ortodox, asta înseamna ca anul acesta, Duminica Învierii a fost situata pe 25 aprilie.
Prin urmare, este un lucru în comun să vedem cum familiile se pregătesc pentru această zi prin fierberea ouălor și prin colorarea lor cu vopsea specială pentru coajă ouălor.Am descoperit procesul alături de un voluntar local care ne-a explicat că vopsirea ouălor poate fi realizată și prin utilizarea cepei. Alegerea culorii roșii este cea mai comună, deoarece evocă sângele lui Isus Hristos.
Joia, vinerea și sâmbătă, înainte de Duminică Învierii, are loc o slujba dedicată Paștelui. Joi, liturghia este mult mai lungă decât de obicei, preotul citește cele 12 povești ale Evangheliei, câte unul pentru fiecare apostol. Am luat parte la această liturghie și a fost interesant cum a trebuit să “reînvățăm” procesul bunelor maniere din biserica datorită faptului că sunt total diferite de cele pe care le urmăm în țară fiecărui dintre noi. Din fericire am avut un localnic dornic cu noi explicând tot ceea ce aveam nevoie să știm pentru nu arată prea mult străini ;). La final, noi și restul oamenilor am primit o sticlă de suc de portocale pentru această ocazie excepțională.
Cea mai impresionantă zi pentru noi a fost sâmbătă. La începutul liturghiei, care începe în jurul orei 12 noaptea, oamenii cântă și împart focul lumânărilor pentru a le aprinde, începând cu lumânarea mare pe care o ține preotul. După un timp, oamenii merg la cimitir cu lumânările lor și le lasă acolo. Este momentul să petrecem câteva minute amintindu-ne de strămoșii lor care au murit. De dată această în cimitir merg să își amintească de oamenii care au fost aproape de ei, însă aici nu mai este vedere doar sărbătoarea de Paști cum suntem obișnuiți noi în Spania. Chiar și pentru unii români cu care am vorbit, care nu sunt din comună, este curios. În plus, putem spune că rezultatul merită văzut și este locul unde ne punem eforturile pentru a surprinde magia acestui moment, la biserica.
Am insotit o familie in cimitirul Teișani în acel moment. Încă auzeam sunetul oamenilor cântând în biserică. Apoi, ne-am întors și slujba s-a terminat pe la 02:30. Cu toate acestea, slujba obișnuia să se termine mai târziu, dar de data aceasta pentru măsurile Covid au terminat totul putin mai devreme.
De-a lungul nopții ne-am dat seama de faptul că nu văzusem cu adevărat comună Teișani noaptea până atunci din cauza stării de urgență. În această zi Teisani, a fost aglomerat dacă l-am compară cu restul zilelor ale acestui an. A fost frumos să vedem tineri stand în jurul nostru vorbind pentru a profită de ocazia specială care ne aduce aici.
A fost cu adevărat impresionant și să rămânem în cimitirul din Olteni mai târziu, acolo nu era nimeni și era foarte liniște. De la această liturghie și timp de 40 de zile, este obișnuit că oamenii să se întâmpine cu «Hristos a Înviat!» și ei răspund cu «Adevărat un înviat!».
Even if Romania is part of Europe and in some aspects not that different from our country, at the same time you have the feeling of being in a different reality. For example, with Easter – the biggest Christian celebration – the feeling is that you have seen this before but it is at the same time different since the one here is the Orthodox churchunlike the Catholic one which is the one we are used to. This is our first experience with the astern part of the Christianism.
We had the opportunity of enjoying Romanian Easter for the first time in the villages of Teișani and Olteni. We have been informed that Easter festivity follows here the old Orthodox calendar, which means that this year the Resurrection Sunday, the most important day for this fest, was on the 25th of April.
Therefore, it is common to see how families prepare for that day by dying boiled eggs with special ink for the shell of the eggs. We discovered the process with a local volunteer that explained to us that the dying can also be made with onions. The red choice for the eggs is the most common because it evokes the blood of Christ.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the Resurrection Sunday, there are special mass. On Thursday, the mass is longer than usual, the priest reads twelvefold of the gospel, one for each apostle. We visited that mass and it was interesting how we had to “relearn” the process and manners in the church due to they are different from the ones we used to follow in our country. Luckily we had a local with us explaining all what we needed to know not too look too much like foreigners ;). At the end, we and the rest of people received a bottle of orange juice for this exceptional occasion.
The most impressive day for us was Saturday. At the beginning of the mass, which starts about 12h in the night, people sing and share the fire of their candles to light them up, starting with the big candle that the priest holds. After a while, people go to the cemetery with their candles and they let them there. It is the moment to spent some minutes remembering their ancestors who passed away. This time in the cemetery to think about the people who were close to us but are not anymore is not sight in the Easter fest that we are used to in Spain. Even for some Romanians who we have talked with but are not from the commune it is curious. Besides, we can say that the result is worthwhile to see, and it is where we put our efforts to capture the magic of this moment.
We acompannied a family to the Teișani’s cementery in that moment. We could hear still the sound of people singing in the church. Then, we came back and the mass finished about 2:30h. Nevertheless, the mass used to finish later, but this time for Covid measures they finished earlier.
Along the night we realised the fact that we had not really seen Teișani at night until then because of the curfew. This day Teisani was crowded if we compare it with the rest of this year. It was nice to see young people hanging around taking profit from the special occasion that brings us here.
It was really impressive also to stay in the cementery of Olteni later, were there was no one and it was really quiet. From this mass and during 40 days, is common that people greets themselves with «Hristos a Înviat!» (Christ has risen) and they answer «Adevărat a înviat!» (Indeed he has risen).
Of cats and dogs
Living with a former farmer/hunter as a dad, I grew with dogs and cat, but I have never seen as many dogs and cats as I have since I got to Romania. So I thought I should take some photos of mans best friends.

Suntem acum în mijlocul celei mai ciudate ierni din viața noastră, cel puțin așa a fost pentru mine, nu numai pentru situația pandemică internațională, ci și din cauza experiențelor pe care le-am trăit și a oamenilor pe care i-am cunoscut. În mod ironic, am crezut că anul acesta a fost un moment bun nu pentru călătorii, ci pentru a mă muta într-o altă țară în calitate de membru al programului corpurilor europene de solidaritate. Să fim sinceri: să faci voluntariat în altă țară, să înveți lucruri noi, să cunoști oameni noi, este mult mai bine decât să stai acasă în orașul tău obișnuit, asistând la lecții online. Așadar, voi împărtăși aici o parte din experiența mea ca străin în România rurală.
We are now in the middle of maybe the weirdest winter of our lives at least it has been like that for me, not only for the international pandemy situation but also because of the experiences I´ve lived and the people I´ve met. Ironically I thought that this year was a good moment not for travel but to move to a different country as member of europen solidarity corps. Let´s be honest to volunteer in another country learning new things knowing new people is far way better than stay at home in your usual city assisting to online lessons. So, on this occasion I´m going to tell you part of my expirience as foreingner in rural Romania.
Căci cine nu știe, eu sunt Josu și vin dintr-o parte mai uscată a lumii, nu este ca și cum aș fi „tuareg” care trăiește în deșert, dar să spunem că în patria mea peisajul era verde iarna și galben vara.
For who doesn´t know, I´m Josu and I´m coming from a drier part of the world, it´s not like I´m a “tuareg” who lives in the desert but let´s say that in my homeland the landscape used to be green in winter and yellow in summer.
După ce am primit în sfârșit documentele mele spaniole pentru prima dată, am cumpărat un zbor pentru a veni în România pe 7 ianuarie. Am ajuns deja pe 8 dimineața devreme și, ca să fiu sincer, m-am așteptat să fie puțin mai rece când am ieșit din avion, dar au fost aproximativ 2 ° C. Era într-adevăr frig, dar putea fi și mai rău. Acolo de unde vin această temperatură ar putea fi cea minimă, uneori ajunge la 0 ° C, dar nu este niciodată suficient de rece ca să ningă. Totuși, în acea zi m-am întâlnit cu coordonatorul meu care a venit să mă ia și am început drumul spre Izvoarele. Drumul părea același ca atunci când venisem prima dată vara, același drum, aceleași case și aceleași altare deoparte, de asemenea adânc în noapte. Pur și simplu era mai frig.
After I got finally my Spanish documents for the first time I bought a flight to come to Romania on 7th of January I arrived already on 8th in the early morning and to be honest I expected it to be a little bit colder when I got out from the plane but it was like 2ºC. It was cold indeed but it could be worse. Where I come from that temperature could be the minimum, sometimes we reach 0ºC but it´s never enough to snow. However, that day I met my coordinator who came to pick me up and we started the way to Izvoarele. The way seemed the same than when I came the first time on summer, the same road, the same houses and the same shrines aside, also deep in the night. It just was colder.
Am ajuns la noua mea casă gazdă în jurul orei 04:30 și, deși eram obosit, nu aveam somn, așa că am decis să mănânc ceva și să mă uit la ceva distractiv în laptop. Încercam doar să mă linistesc și să mă simt confortabil până când brusc m-am uitat pe fereastră. Nu mă așteptam ca lumina ușoară a zorilor să mă lase să văd că ningea de când am intrat în casă și curtea era deja complet albă. Știu că acest lucru trebuie să sune prost și foarte normal pentru o mulțime de oameni, dar dacă vă spun că nu am văzut niciodată că ninge până atunci? Adică am văzut zăpada doar o dată, dar nu ningea cu adevărat și era într-un loc în care nu existau multe elemente în jurul meu, cum ar fi case, copaci, oameni … în afară de asta a fost acum nouă ani așa că…
I arrived to my new host house at around 4:30 AM and even though I was tired I was not really sleepy so I decided to eat something and watch something entertaining in my laptop. I was just trying to chill and make myself comfortable until suddenly, I looked through the window. I didn´t expected the slight light of the dawn to let me see that it had been snowing since I got into the house and the yard was already completely white. I know that this must sound silly and super normal for a lot of people but, what if I tell you that I never saw it snowing until then? I mean, I only saw the snow once but it was not really snowing and it was in a place where there was not a lot of elements around me such as houses, trees, people… besides it was nine years ago so…
Oricum, bineînțeles văzând că am decis să merg la plimbare pentru a cunoaște mai bine noul meu sat începând din curtea mea. Terminând acolo, m-am aventurat pe stradă și am început să merg. La un moment dat mă întorc în lateral și am intrat într-o mică „stradă” sau mai bine pe o potecă, care este traversată la un moment dat de șinele de tren. Imaginea aceea dintr-o clipă mi-a amintit de scena clasică a unui tren care trecea prin filmul peisajul alb al Europei de Est
Anyways, of course seeing that I decided to go for a walk to get to know better my new village starting from my own yard. Finishing there, I ventured out the street and started to walk. At some point I turn to the side and got into a little “street” or better yet a path which is crossed at some point by the traintracks. That image by a moment reminded me of the classic scene of a train going through the white countryside of the eastern europe in the movies.
După câteva minute de coborâre, tocmai m-am lovit de râul Crasna, cel care dă numele străzii mele și acelei frumoase mănăstiri de dincolo de Schiulesti. Doar să menționez că a fi acolo toamna a fost ca și cum ai fi fost într-un basm.
After some minutes going downhill I just bumped into the Crasna River, the one which gives the name to my street and that beautiful monastery beyond Schiulesti. just mention that being there on Autumn was like immerse oneself into a fairytale.
În cele din urmă, pe măsură ce ningea și am început să-mi ud blugii, am decis să mă întorc acasă la casa mea confortabilă pentru a încerca să ma încălzesc. Mi-a plăcut România vara,toamna, dar mi s-a părut frumos peisajul acoperit de zăpadă. Sunt sigur că o să mă bucur de primăvară aici. De asemenea … Da, este foarte frumos să folosești lemnul și să faci foc singur pentru a-ți încălzi casa, dar … Haide, încă douăzeci de grade nu sună așa de rău, nu?
Eventually as it kept snowing, and I started to get my jeans wet I decided to go back home to my cozy house to try to warm it up. I liked Romania on Summer also in Autumn, I found the snow-covered countryside beautiful. I´m sure I´m going to enjoy the spring here. Also… Yeah, it´s very nice to use wood and make fire yourself to get your house warm but… Come on, twenty degrees more doesn´t sound that bad, eh?
