Portret de voluntar – Josué (Mexic + Spania)

Hi, my name is Josué and I´m from Andalucia, Spain. However I also have my Mexican side – I was born there and all my family is Mexican. I am 20 years old and I have officially been studying technological and scientific stuff. Nevertheless, I love to learn and study other disciplines in my free time, such as history, languages, music or even audiovisuals; I also spend a lot of time playing videogames (more than I would like to admit). I’ve been living in the Iberian peninsula since I was six years old and I never had the chance to travel to the rest of Europe until now – through European solidarity corps. I spent two months working on the new Teișani youth centre and it was a very good experience, so I decided to spent more time here and keep improving the skills that I think I need in order to become the person I want to be.

As for my future plans, I would really like to keep traveling, learning languages and know the cultures behind them. And also at some point resume my studies and go to univerity to study engineering.

If you ask me, I would say I’m not the kind of guy who cheers up the place, but I love to follow and keep the good vibes around me, so we all could be cool with each other.

My name is Gertrudis, I am 28 years old and I come from a small town near the sea in Catalonia, Spain. I have studied Audiovisual Communication and Investigative Journalism, so I am very keen on these topics. I love being creative, communicating and I am very curious and interested in knowing more about different cultures and history, especially European history. Furthermore, I am interested in social change based on ecologism, gender issues and municipalism focus.  Therefore, I have been participating and working with associations related to these issues in the last few years.

Nowadays, after residing in my quiet town all my life, I wanted to experience life in a foreign country and meet people from other cultures. The European Solidarity Corps allows me to get involved in a multicultural atmosphere, so I have been looking for projects and for the chance to enjoy some of them. When I read about the Discover Teișani project, I knew it was perfect for me. It is an opportunity to know in depth about Romanian culture which is quite unknown for me even though it has strong cultural connections with my country of origin, as the Latin language. Of course, I am excited also about the idea to live in a rural area, surrounded by nature that I would love to discover, photograph and just enjoy. For the moment I need to be patient and cautious due to the lockdown we need in these times, but these measures will be worthwhile.

Hi, my name is Andrea, I’m from Italy and for this year I’m one of the volunteers for Curba de Cultură here in Romania.

During the summer I was really confused about what to do about my life, to continue my studies in another country or find something new to develop and build my experience? When I saw the project Discover of Teisani I thought: ‘’Finally something that goes in the same direction in which I want to go’’. Covid 19 was and certainly still is a particular issue that can arrest people from having any kind of personal experiences in other countries, but in that moment I felt a sensation that strongly pushed me in to the project. I think that I made the right choice. There are a lot of people that, like me, are feeling disoriented after they complete their studies, especially in sociological or anthropological fields. I think that this can be the perfect place for people that share this type of passion and objectives.

Apart from this, I’m 24 and, as I said,  I recently finished my bachelor in intercultural communication in Turin, Italy. My dream is to make documentaries, write articles and monographs around the world to any kind of association that works to promote the territory, the people and the local culture.About the place I am in, I really suggest it for those who love nature and for those who want an unconventional life experience despite the standard and the comfort that city offers. Being warm is wonderful, but being warm thanks to your own fire has completely another taste.

Buna! My name is Danelle Sciberras. I am 19 years old. I am from a small island in the Mediterranean sea called Malta. I am from a town called Kalkara but I live in Żabbar.

One of my passions is travelling to different countries, exploring new places, meeting new people, learning about their culture and maybe some words in their language. I also love food as you can see in my picture. I like trying out new things and learning something new along the way. I am always looking for a new adventure. I like reading and watching movies, nature, animals and mountains which are a lot here so that’s cool.

I was already volunteering with Curba de Cultura but then Covid-19 hit so I had to go back to Malta. I was really sad because I was enjoying myself here in Romania and I was learning some Romanian. But then 6 months later, I had the opportunity to come back which obviously I took.

I am looking forward to seeing you again! Pa 🙂

Pa 🙂

Portret de voluntar – Sara (Denmark)

Hi, my name is Sara Lil-Jane Pedersen. I am 19 years old, and from the northern part of Denmark. This is my first time being a part of a European Solidarity Corps project, and I am very excited. I love travelling so that I can explore new cultures and meet new people.

I have always wanted to do volunteer work in another country, and this year I planned to have a gap year, so when I got the mail from the ESC to go 10 months to Romania, I of course accepted it.

In my free time I love to listen to music, photography and exploring the nature around me. Nature has always been a part of me. Back home in Denmark I grew up on a small farm, and I have been a scout for 11 years, which have given me some experience in making activities for young people.

That’s why I’m very excited to start creating activities for the youngsters in the area and learning the language.

Can’t wait to meet all of you.

Hi!  My name is Carlos and I am 22 years old.  I am from Barcelona, Spain and in addition to eating “tortilla de patata” and drinking “sangria”, I have studied Social and Cultural Animation for two years and have worked as a social educator for three years.  I wanted to dedicate myself to the whole world of non-formal education when I started as a volunteer in an association in my neighborhood that is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the community.  At that moment I learned to see what are the strengths and weaknesses of my neighborhood and how doing activities, events and support can help to improve everything, both for our neighborhood and internationally.

Apart from working on that, I also play Korfball, a sport that is not very well known but that has many values behind that it teaches such as gender equality, non-violence in sport, equal opportunities … A way of seeing sport  as an educational tool in many ways.

I consider myself a cheerful and funny person who always tries to infect other people with a pleasant and calm environment.  I am very curious and I like to investigate almost everything to understand its meaning, why, its origin and much more.  I also like to connect with people because I think that each person is a book with a story to tell, and reading books is a very good tool for learning about history and culture at the same time, right?

Salut!

Hello! I’m Rebecca, I am 18 years old and I come from Italy. I am here thanks to Curba de Cultură and – with other volunteers – we are going to promote activities to lead young people. I recently graduated from the secondary High school and next year I’m going to study Anthropology. After the end of the school I decided that I would like to take a year for me, for doing what I like: so I decided to take part to this project, to know some new people and to understand the culture of another country. I am young so I didn’t have a lot of this experiences; I have just an experience as a student abroad and then another experience as a volunteer in a community that takes care of old people. I’m interested in taking part in a lot of activities because I like working in a team, sharing our thoughts and taking decisions together.

I felt totally in love with the landscape and with nature, because its something that -living in a big city- I can’t see every day. Here the nature is something really relaxing and I really like animals, especially dogs. The goal that I would like to reach during this year is the capacity to understand better people that have other points of view, different from mines. My goal is to learn more about the local traditions and to learn Romanian, that is seems so interesting to me.

🙂 Rebecca

🙂 Rebecca

Portret de voluntar – Juliette (Franța)

Hello everyone!

My name is Juliette and I come from the North of France. I’m a new volunteer in Curba de Cultura and I’m so excited to begin activities with young people! I’m here to do an EVS for 7 months and I think that I will change my life.

I decide to come in Romania because my sending organization which is called Adice proposed me this mission in Curba de Cultura and I very enjoy the objectives of this NGO! Moreover, I wanted to discover a foreign country that I never visit before and Romania appears to me like a new country! I like travelling and meeting new people with an other culture than mine 🙂

Currently, me and the other new volunteers are in isolation by prevention for the Covid. The isolation enables me to know better the other volunteers and to learn some words in Romanian like “Buna Ziua” or “multumesc”. After it, I hope to discover Romania and its beautiful landscapes and also to begin my EVS with Curba de Cultura 🙂

Thanks you for reading my portrait!

Importance of environmental protection.

Why it is important to keep the environment and why you can read so much about this in daily news. Does not really people around the world realise the seriousness of the problem or do they just think that what they individually can do and so they try not to pay as much attention to it as they could.
Over the next few years, this topic has become increasingly popular and the consequences of its impact have been brought to the fore in more ways than before. A great many climate activists have come out and have led to many climate strikes. Climate strikes have already achieved something crucial – young people – who really can imagine a different social order have become a platform to fight for their lives. They are not taken very seriously yet, but it has been noticed, that they have the perseverance to continue as long as something finally gets better or they are taken seriously by the others people.
But what each person can do individually to keep the environment a little better off for future generations. Firstly, the small steps you can make in your daily life, namely significantly reducing the use of plastic, by using alternative options, the easiest way to avoid plastic bags, is to own one, or better yet, to make yourself a fabric shopping bag that you can always carry with you. You don’t always have to put all the vegetables and fruits in the plastic, all the while the delicate plastic bags offered in supermarkets have no use for later, you don’t always know if they will last when you get home, so why use them, only burden the environment.
There are annual cleaning days, both worldwide and nationally, but the problem of nature pollution, is still here. A lot of people think, what it can change, if they, individually protect environment and recycle trash. But the change begins with everyone’s initiative. You don’t have to think about how much it will benefit the environment if you recycle and care about the environment but the rest of the world looks like they don’t care.
Since the re-educate people mostly do not succeed, you must correctly change the behavior of an inevitable comfortably.

What if we do not want to leave the goals of sustainable development and active citizenship dependent on people’s random choices?
Moving towards re-educating a person’s environment and relationships rather than re-educating them. For example, active participation needs to be integrated as part of the “real life” organisation. We should probably move towards an environment where some things are “inevitable” for young people but only for young people, for everybody. In the field of environmental sustainability, it is clear that choices that have been made inevitably have the potential to attract people who do not think in terms of environmental sustainability themselves. Waste is also sorted by those who have multiple bins in place of one bin – convenient and inevitable.

Despite the fact that people already have a high level of environmental knowledge and they keep going on the way to be more awareness to moving towards a more sustainable environment. Only the collective awareness of all countries and strong public pressure on our policymakers and businesses will help to make the planet cleaner.

Recycling Differences

Being working in an environmental project the past 9 months and now approaching to end of it got me comparing the waste management and recycling system between Portugal and Romania.

For what the colors go it is the same blue for paper and carton, yellow Plastic/Metal, green for glass and brown for organic waste/food leftovers. In Portugal in every recycling container spot there usually a small red one for the electronic such as batteries and here I didn’t saw a lot if any of those.

By the Paris agreement majority of EU countries set a 50% mark. This basically means that half of their trash should be recycled and both Portugal and Romania are not really following this.

Romania statistics say that only 14% of all the trash made is recycled while Portugal has 39% which is better but still not the goal that they’ve set for 2020 and asked to the EU for two extra years to achieve this goal which was denied.

While my EVS we had one truck passing every Friday for the non-recyclable trash and for the recyclable trash was passing every 2 weeks. Back in Portugal as far as I remember the truck for the non-recyclable passes twice a week while the recyclable passes once per week. In this field I think it isn’t that bad since I come from an average city with way more population than the village that I was living during my EVS.

I had the opportunity to visit both a landfill in Romania and in Portugal and I can see that there’s a big difference. In Romania I visited a landfill from Valeni de Munte and It was a big difference. In here they did almost all the things by hand without help of machinery which is probably one of the causes of the different percentage in recycling rate. While In Portugal there’s a big use of heavy machinery and probably a bigger budget going into this field and having machines helping is good since they can accelerate all the process and having more recyclable trash coming and therefore recycle more.
