The feeling when people speak Romanian to you – Sentimentul c\u00e2nd oamenii \u00ee\u021bi vorbesc \u00een rom\u00e2n\u0103<\/p><\/div>\n

So you are so excited. You arrived in Romania and you are starting your EVS, you spend your time in Curba or with the other volunteers, English may look complicated but you can communicate with them, suddenly you realize you’re thirsty, but you’re lucky, you have a shop just in front of the organization house, you cross the street, enter the shop and… Oh snap, you have no idea of Romanian. Don’t worry, here you have a small guide made by my experience.<\/p>\n

E\u0219ti super entuziasmat. Ai ajuns \u00een Rom\u00e2nia \u021bi-ai \u00eenceput EVS-ul, petreci timp la Curb\u0103 ori cu al\u021bi voluntari, limba englez\u0103 pare complicat\u0103 dar pute\u021bi comunica \u0219i dintr-o dat\u0103 realizezi c\u0103 \u021bi-e sete, dar ai noroc, este un magazin chiar peste drum de organiza\u021bie, traversezi, intri \u0219i… oh, nu ai nici cea mai vag\u0103 idee despre limba rom\u00e2n\u0103. Nu te \u00eengrijora ai aici un mic ghid creat din experien\u021ba mea proprie.<\/p>\n

So, first of all, read the title, that’s now your god. ”Nu vorbesc rom\u00e2ne\u015fte” means ”I don’t speak romanian”. Romanian people will understand it, also they will talk with you anyway, maybe closer to you, louder or slower but you still don’t understand them, so next step: Da (which means yes) repeat it, constantly, you don’t understand what they are telling you so you just keep saying da and laugh whenever they laugh, that’s the best trick.<\/p>\n

\u00cen primul r\u00e2nd, cite\u0219te titlul, acesta este noul t\u0103u dumnezeu. “I do not speak Romanian” \u00eenseamn\u0103 “Nu vorbesc rom\u00e2ne\u0219te”. Rom\u00e2nii vor \u00een\u021belge, dar vor vorbi mai departe, poate mai aproape de tine, mai tare sau mai rar, \u0219i \u00een continuare nu \u00eei vei \u00eene\u021belege, deci trecem la urm\u0103torul pas: Da, repet\u0103 da, constant, nu \u00een\u021belegi ce \u00ee\u021bi spun ei a\u0219ac\u0103 spune mai departe da, \u0219i r\u00e2de ori de c\u00e2te ori ei r\u00e2d, cel mai bun truc.<\/p>\n

If you’re lucky enough and your native language comes from latin also you will have some word that you can understand randomly, when you understand a word, repeat it and say yes with your head, fantastic, you’re having a perfect conversation now.<\/p>\n

Dac\u0103 e\u0219ti suficient de norocos \u0219i limba ta matern\u0103 vine din latin\u0103, vei \u00een\u021belege ni\u0219te cuvinte pe ici pe colo, c\u00e2nd \u00een\u021belegi un cuv\u00e2nt, repet\u0103-l \u0219i aprob\u0103 cu o mi\u0219care a capului, fantastic, ai o conversa\u021bie minunat\u0103 acum.<\/p>\n

But now back to the begining, you are in the shop, choose wisely, the common brands has the same language in every country, if you are looking for something different you just need to read the name on it, wait till the cashier stop laughing because you probably said something completely unrelated to what you want and then point at whatever you want. Now is the moment to pay, oh yes, plastic money, you forgot it, it’s always nice to use it the first days, you give the products to the cashier and she says to you ”saptelei\u015ficincizecibani” (or something like that) you enter in full panic mode.<\/p>\n

S\u0103 ne \u00eentoarcem, e\u0219ti la magazin, alegi cu aten\u021bie, m\u0103rcile faimoase sunt la fel \u00een fiecare \u021bar\u0103, dac\u0103 cau\u021bi ceva diferit, doar cite\u0219te ce scrie pe ambalaj, a\u0219teapt\u0103 p\u00e2n\u0103 v\u00e2nz\u0103torul se opre\u0219te din r\u00e2s c\u0103ci probabil ai spus ceva f\u0103r\u0103 leg\u0103tur\u0103 \u0219i apoi arat\u0103 cu degetul spre ceea ce \u00ee\u021bi dore\u0219ti. Acum e momentul s\u0103 pl\u0103te\u0219ti, oh da, bani de plastic, am uitat, sunt interesan\u021bi \u00een primele zile, dai produsele v\u00e2nz\u0103torului \u0219i \u00ee\u021bi spune ”saptelei\u015ficincizecibani” (sau ceva asem\u0103n\u0103tor) \u0219i \u00eencepi s\u0103 te panichezi la maximum.<\/p>\n

Now you have two options, first, take a random note and give it to the cashier, if their hands still extended don’t worry put more random notes on it till it’s okay.<\/p>\n

The second option is to try your Romanian again ”scrie\u021bi pre\u021bul, v\u0103 rog” (Write the price please) they will show you the calculator and the job is done.<\/p>\n

Acum ai dou\u0103 variante, prima: iei o bancnot\u0103 la \u00eent\u00e2mplare o dai v\u00e2nz\u0103torului, iar dac\u0103 m\u00e2na e \u00eenc\u0103 \u00eentins\u0103, nu te \u00eengrijora, mai pune bancnote la \u00eent\u00e2mplare p\u00e2n\u0103 e ok.<\/p>\n

A doua variant\u0103 este s\u0103 \u00ee\u021bi \u00eencerci abilit\u0103\u021bile de limb\u0103 rom\u00e2n\u0103 din nou ”scrie\u021bi pre\u021bul, v\u0103 rog”, ei \u00ee\u021bi vor ar\u0103ta ecranul calculatorului \u0219i treaba e gata.<\/p>\n

So this is a small guide to help your romanian conversations. The last advice I can give you is to learn the language and that the regular water is ”Ap\u0103 plat\u0103” if you don’t want the sparkly one.<\/p>\n
