At the moment of writing, Maria and I have been volunteering with Curba de Cultur\u0103 for almost two months. During this time, we have been researching multiple subjects for our project \u2018Youth Hosteling for Local Development\u2019. One of the goals of our project will be to promote the future Tei\u015fani Youth Hostel, which is located in Olteni. The plan is to open the building for tourists later this year. The hostel will be one out of many youth hostels in the world, but the first in this area of Romania. Therefore, I would like to tell you something more about the concept of hosteling in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all started in 1907, when a German teacher called Richard Schirrmann came up with the idea of creating a youth hostel. During an excursion with his class that involved camping, they were caught by a thunderstorm. Instead of having to stay outside, they were allowed to take shelter in a school building. After this experience, he decided to open his own school for all young hikers that came to the area. However, this was only possible during the summer holidays, since the building was still used as a school for the rest of the year. In order to accommodate travelers all year long, he opened the first official youth hostel of the world five years later. This was located in a castle in his German town Altena<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, a youth hostel is a supervised, inexpensive accommodation where travelers can rent a bed in a dormitory for one or more nights. People can come alone or in a group. In a hostel, all spaces are shared. This means that for example you can sleep in a dormitory with Italian travelers, brush your teeth in the bathroom next to an Indian guest, play Uno in the living room with a Spanish girl and cook your dinner in the same kitchen as a student from Poland. Because you have no private place, you will meet a lot of other travelers. They can tell you about their countries and cultures and share their experiences with you.

As you already might have noticed, the concept of hostels is different from the concept of hotels. In a hotel, guests book a full room which includes a bathroom. In hostels, guests don\u2019t need to book a full room but can just rent a bed. This means that they don\u2019t have the same amount of privacy that people have in hotels, since all spaces in hostels are shared. On the other hand, this gives the guests more opportunities to meet other travelers. Furthermore, in most hotels it is not allowed to bring your own food. In hostels, however, guests can bring, prepare and store their own food without any problem. And last but not least, hostels are usually cheaper than hotels.

Schirrmann originally created his concept for young people, so he called the place a \u2018youth hostel\u2019. Similar accommodations took on to that name as well. In the beginning, hostels were indeed only used by young people. This has changed over time, because nowadays travelers from all ages can stay in youth hostels. The majority of hostels welcome people from all different ages, cultures and genders. Some youth hostels have a minimum age policy for young solo travelers, but often children are welcome when their parents come with them and book a private room.

Usually, a lot of things are possible in hostels, and staff members are usually willing to help you with all kinds of things. Most hostels have a good and close relationship with the local community and environment. For example, the hostel can have employees that grew up in the area or employees that have a lot of experience with traveling know the area well. These staff members can advise the guests on things to do and places where they can go. This way, they can also promote local producers, institutions and businesses.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total number of Romanian hostels is not very large yet, but more hostels are opening here every year. Almost all of them are located in cities, for example in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Bra\u015fov and Timi\u015foara. However, as long as people go out and explore, outside of the cities are many things to see and do as well. Like Schirrmann himself once said: \u201cIt is impossible to squeeze the limitless world into a crowded classroom.\u201d (or in this case, a couple of cities)<\/em> \u201cSo the school must go out into the world.\u201d And using hostels is just one way to do that…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u00cen momentul scrierii acestui articol, Maria \u0219i cu mine suntem voluntari la Curba de Cultur\u0103 de aproape dou\u0103 luni. \u00cen acest timp, am cercetat mai multe subiecte pentru proiectul nostru \u201eYouth Hosteling for Local Development\u201d. Unul dintre scopurile proiectului nostru va fi promovarea viitorului hostel pentru tineret din comuna Tei\u015fani, care se afl\u0103 \u00een Olteni. Planul este de a deschide cl\u0103direa pentru turi\u0219ti la sf\u00e2r\u0219itul acestui an. Hostelul va fi unul dintre multele hosteluri de tineret din lume, dar primul din aceast\u0103 zon\u0103 a Rom\u00e2niei. Prin urmare, a\u0219 dori s\u0103 v\u0103 spun ceva mai multe despre conceptul de hosteling \u00een general.

    Totul a \u00eenceput \u00een 1907, c\u00e2nd un profesor de german\u0103 pe nume Richard Schirrmann a venit cu ideea de a crea un hostel pentru tineret. \u00cen timpul unei excursii cu clasa sa, care implica camping, au fost prin\u0219i de o furtun\u0103. \u00cen loc s\u0103 fie nevoi\u021bi s\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2n\u0103 afar\u0103, li s-a permis s\u0103 se ad\u0103posteasc\u0103 \u00eentr-o cl\u0103dire din \u0219coal\u0103. Dup\u0103 aceast\u0103 experien\u021b\u0103, a decis s\u0103-\u0219i deschid\u0103 propria \u0219coal\u0103 pentru to\u021bi tinerii drume\u021bi veni\u021bi \u00een zon\u0103. Totu\u0219i, acest lucru a fost posibil doar \u00een timpul vacan\u021bei de var\u0103, deoarece cl\u0103direa a fost \u00eenc\u0103 folosit\u0103 ca \u0219coal\u0103 pentru restul anului.     Practic, un hostel pentru tineret este o cazare supravegheat\u0103, ieftin\u0103, unde c\u0103l\u0103torii pot \u00eenchiria un pat \u00eentr-un c\u0103min pentru una sau mai multe nop\u021bi. Oamenii pot veni singuri sau \u00een grup. \u00centr-un hostel, toate spa\u021biile sunt comune. Aceasta \u00eenseamn\u0103 c\u0103, de exemplu, po\u021bi dormi \u00eentr-un c\u0103min cu c\u0103l\u0103tori italieni, po\u021bi s\u0103 te speli pe din\u021bi \u00een baie l\u00e2ng\u0103 un oaspete indian, s\u0103 te joci Uno \u00een camera de zi cu un spaniol \u0219i s\u0103 g\u0103te\u0219ti cina \u00een aceea\u0219i buc\u0103t\u0103rie cu un student din Polonia.     Dup\u0103 cum probabil a\u021bi observat deja, conceptul de hostel este diferit de conceptul de hoteluri. \u00centr-un hotel, oaspe\u021bii rezerv\u0103 o camer\u0103 complet\u0103, care include o baie. \u00cen hostel, oaspe\u021bii nu trebuie s\u0103 rezerve o camer\u0103 complet\u0103, ci pot doar \u00eenchiria un pat. Aceasta \u00eenseamn\u0103 c\u0103 nu au aceea\u0219i confiden\u021bialitate pe care o au oamenii \u00een hoteluri, deoarece toate spa\u021biile din hostelului sunt comune.     Schirrmann \u0219i-a creat ini\u021bial conceptul pentru tineri, a\u0219a c\u0103 a numit locul \u201eyouth hostel\u201d. Unit\u0103\u021bi de cazare similare au luat \u0219i acest nume. La \u00eenceput, hostelurile erau \u00eentr-adev\u0103r folosite doar de tineri. Acest lucru s-a schimbat de-a lungul timpului, pentru c\u0103 \u00een zilele noastre c\u0103l\u0103torii de toate v\u00e2rstele pot sta \u00een \u201chosteluri pentru tineret\u201d. Majoritatea hostelurilor primesc oameni de toate v\u00e2rstele, culturile \u0219i genurile diferite.     De obicei, \u00een hosteluri sunt posibile o mul\u021bime de lucruri, iar membrii personalului sunt de obicei dispu\u0219i s\u0103 te ajute cu tot felul de lucruri. Cele mai multe pensiuni au o rela\u021bie bun\u0103 \u0219i str\u00e2ns\u0103 cu comunitatea local\u0103 \u0219i mediul. De exemplu, pensiunea poate avea angaja\u021bi care au crescut \u00een zon\u0103 sau angaja\u021bi cu mult\u0103 experien\u021b\u0103 \u00een c\u0103l\u0103torii care cunosc bine zona.     Num\u0103rul total de hosteluri din Rom\u00e2nia nu este \u00eenc\u0103 foarte mare, dar aici se deschid \u00een fiecare an mai multe pensiuni. Aproape toate sunt situate \u00een ora\u0219e, de exemplu \u00een Bucure\u0219ti, Cluj-Napoca, Bra\u0219ov \u0219i Timi\u0219oara. Cu toate acestea, at\u00e2ta timp c\u00e2t oamenii ies \u0219i exploreaz\u0103, \u00een afara ora\u0219elor sunt multe lucruri de v\u0103zut \u0219i de f\u0103cut. A\u0219a cum \u00eensu\u0219i Schirrmann a spus odat\u0103: \u201eEste imposibil s\u0103 stoarce\u021bi nelimitata lume \u00eentr-o sal\u0103 de clas\u0103 aglomerat\u0103\u201d.
