Imagine a cold winter evening in Romania. Darkness quickly falling over the crunching snow and the unforgiving frost distorting our joints. We just came back home and started to make fires to bring some heat to our ice-cold rooms. I was more successful (there is a reason why they called me the Fire Queen in the first week of my EVS) so Heloise eventually gave up and sat next to me on the floor, leaning against the stove and stealing the precious heat. This is how we started chatting about our ideas.<\/p>\n

We both have an interest in the widely understood area of human rights, and like to find opportunities to discuss, express our opinions and listen to others\u2019 perspectives on this topic. We realised that when facilitating activities in local high schools we often started conversations related to human rights with students but never had time or right circumstances to continue them. We were curious what would happen if we tried to create those circumstances and bring the topic of human rights to the local context. We envisioned forming a small group, a local movement that starts from discussions and then takes it from there to see what comes up.<\/p>\n

What did we have in our minds? Movement workshops, painting benches on the streets, student newspapers, a crowdfunding page to buy a camera, documentary screenings, portable escape rooms, you name it. At that point our collective imagination went rather wild.<\/p>\n

We started from spending hours on Facebook and talking to people we knew, trying to convince them working their brains for an hour-long discussion after school is a really excellent idea. Finally we gathered our groups and were ready to start the first meeting. Well, almost. Only thing missing was the name. You can imagine two EVS brains, pumped out of all creativity from organising other activities, trying to come up with a good-sounding name.<\/p>\n

Society of Empowered Youth (because SEY sounds cool).<\/p>\n

Youth Empowered Solution (because YES is an even cooler abbreviation).<\/p>\n

Junior Leagues….<\/p>\n

Yeah, I know. But at least I\u2019ve tried.<\/p>\n

‘JOIN THE TALK!’ said Heloise in desperation. Little did she know that we will be \u2018Joining The Talk\u2019 for the next four months. We just shortened it to \u2018JTT\u2019 so that we don\u2019t sound too sketchy.<\/p>\n

So here were were, suddenly having regular JTT meetings twice a week. Now, you may wonder how our discussions looked like. We had the standard coffee sipping and favourite bench in the park occupying. But we also had the slightly less typical zacusca (all volunteers favourite) and jam indulgence on a porch, movement games in the woods by the lake (\u2018we are like forest men or scouts or something\u2019 summed up Heloise eloquently) or thunderstorm-stuck conversations in a hidden monastery. We spoke about gender equality, youth activism worldwide, school bullying, racism, project management, youth opportunities, cooking, our dreams, troubles, what annoys us, favourite food, prejudice, generation gaps\u2026<\/p>\n

The group went in all kinds of directions, and it is still constantly transforming, shaping, and forming. We had to say goodbye to Heloise and then Tim became my new partner in crime. But we managed to make that extra step from talking to doing. We brought the discussion on racism to one of the local schools, collaborated with One World Romania<\/a> to organise an afternoon with documentary screening and food sharing to tackle the issue of bullying, and created an Opportunities Fair to inform local youth about national and international opportunities they can be involved in.<\/p>\n

\u2018What you are doing there is very alien\u2019 I once heard from a friend when talking about JTT. And I must say I couldn\u2019t have heard a better compliment on the work we have done. We still have plenty of ideas and things to do but at this point I am\u00a0proud of what we have achieved so far. Well, apart from the still lacking name. Any suggestions welcomed!<\/p>\n

Abia am ajuns acas\u0103 \u0219i am \u00eenceput s\u0103 \u00eencingem focurile pentru a \u00eenc\u0103lzi pu\u021bin camerele noastre de ghea\u021b\u0103. Eu am avut mai mult succes (este un motiv pentru care lumea-mi spune Regina Focului \u00eenc\u0103 din prima s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2n\u0103 de SEV) a\u0219a c\u0103 Heloise s-a dat b\u0103tut\u0103 \u00een final, \u0219i s-a a\u0219ezat l\u00e2ng\u0103 mine pe podea, sprijinindu-se de aragaz \u0219i fur\u00e2nd c\u0103ldura pre\u021bioas\u0103. Cam a\u0219a a \u00eenceput discu\u021bia despre ideile noastre.<\/p>\n

Am\u00e2ndou\u0103 avem un interes \u00een zona general \u00een\u0219eleas\u0103 a drepturilor omului, \u0219i ne plac ocaziile de a discuta, de a ne expune opiniile \u0219i de a asculta perspectivele altora legate de acest subiect. Am realizat c\u0103 atunci c\u00e2nd facilit\u0103m activit\u0103\u021bi \u00een liceele din localitate, \u00eencepem de multe ori conversa\u021bii legate de drepturile omului cu elevii dar niciodat\u0103 nu am avut timp sau circumstan\u021bele potrivite pentru a le continua. Am fost curioase ce s-ar \u00eent\u00e2mpla dac\u0103 am \u00eencerca s\u0103 cre\u0103m aceste circumstan\u021be \u0219i s\u0103 aducem subiectul drepturilor omului \u00een contextul local. Ne-am imaginat formarea unui grup restr\u00e2ns, o mi\u0219care local\u0103 care porne\u0219te de la discu\u021bii \u0219i evolueaz\u0103 din ele.<\/p>\n

Ce aveam noi \u00een minte? Ateliere de mi\u0219care, pictat de b\u0103nci pe strad\u0103, ziare ale elevilor, o pagin\u0103 de str\u00e2ngeri de fonduri pentru a cump\u0103ra o camer\u0103, proiec\u021bii de documentare, escape-rooms portabile, numi\u021bi-le cum vre\u021bi. \u00cen acel moment imagina\u021bia noastr\u0103 colectiv\u0103 a sc\u0103pat de sub control.<\/p>\n

Am \u00eenceput de la a petrece ore pe Facebook vorbind cu oameni pe care \u00eei \u0219tiam, \u00eencerc\u00e2nd s\u0103 \u00eei convingem c\u0103 s\u0103-\u021bi munce\u0219ti creierul pentru o or\u0103 de discu\u021bii dup\u0103 \u0219coal\u0103 este o idee chiar bun\u0103. \u00centr-un final am reu\u0219it s\u0103 ne adun\u0103m grupurile \u0219i eram preg\u0103ti\u021bi s\u0103 \u00eencepem prima \u00eent\u00e2lnire. Bine, aproape preg\u0103ti\u021bi. Singurul lucru care ne lipsea era numele. V\u0103 pute\u021bi imagina dou\u0103 creiere de SEV, scurse de creativitate dup\u0103 at\u00e2tea organiz\u0103ri de activit\u0103\u021bi, \u00eencerc\u00e2nd s\u0103 g\u0103seasc\u0103 un nume care s\u0103 sune bine.<\/p>\n

“JOIN THE TALK” a spus Heloide \u00een disperare. Nici nu \u0219tia ea c\u0103 noi ne vom al\u0103tura discu\u021biei pentru urn\u0103toarele patru luni. Am prescurtat-o JTT ca s\u0103 nu sune foarte ciudat.<\/p>\n

Deci, aici am ajuns, av\u00e2nd dintr-o dat\u0103 \u00eent\u00e2lniri JTT de dou\u0103 ori pe s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2n\u0103. Acum, poate v\u0103 \u00eentreba\u021bi cum ar\u0103tau discu\u021biile noastre. Am avut clasica cea\u0219c\u0103 de cafea pe banca favorit\u0103. Am avut totu\u0219i \u0219i mai pu\u021bin tipica zacusc\u0103 (preferata voluntarilor), r\u0103sf\u0103\u021bul cu dulcea\u021b\u0103 de pe prisp\u0103, jocuri de mi\u0219care \u00een p\u0103durea de l\u00e2ng\u0103 lac (“suntem ca ni\u0219te p\u0103durari sau cerceta\u0219i sau ceva de genul” ne-a numit Heloise elocvent) sau discu\u021bii oprite de furtun\u0103 \u00eentr-o m\u00e2n\u0103stire ascuns\u0103. Am vorbit despre egalitatea dintre sexe, activismul tineretului pe glob, batjocura din \u0219coli, rasismul, managementul proiectelor, oportunit\u0103\u021bile tinerilor, g\u0103titul, visele noastre, problemele noastre, ce ne enerveaz\u0103, m\u00e2ncarea favorit\u0103, prejudicii, diferen\u021ba dintre genera\u021bii…<\/p>\n

Grupul a mers \u00een tot felul de direc\u021bii \u0219i \u00eenc\u0103 evolueaz\u0103, se transform\u0103, se formeaz\u0103. A trebuit s\u0103 ne lu\u0103m la revedere de la Heloise, apoi Tim a devenit noul meu partener in crime. Am reu\u0219it s\u0103 facem acel pas \u00een plus pentru a trece de la vorbe la fapte. Am adus subiectul rasismului \u00eentr-o \u0219coal\u0103 din localitate, colabor\u00e2nd cu One World Romania pentru a organiza o dup\u0103 amiaz\u0103 cu o proiec\u021bie de documentar \u0219i \u00eemp\u0103r\u021bit m\u00e2ncare pentru a aborda problema “bullying-ului” din \u0219coli \u0219i am creat un T\u00e2rg de Oportunit\u0103\u021bi pentru a informa tinerii locali despre oportunit\u0103\u021bile na\u021bionale \u0219i interna\u021bionale de care pot profita.<\/p>\n

“Ce face\u021bi acolo e cam de pe alt\u0103 planet\u0103” am auzit o dat\u0103 de la un prieten care vorbea despre JTT. \u0218i trebuie s\u0103 spun c\u0103 nu puteam s\u0103 aud un compliment mai bun pentru munca pe care o depuneam. \u00cenc\u0103 mai avem idei \u0219i lucruri de f\u0103cut, dar \u00een punctul \u00een care ne afl\u0103m acum, sunt m\u00e2ndr\u0103 de ceea ce am realizat.
